Jeff, I just tried, it's perfect. How did you find ?

Aradalf, usually directories have permissions 755 and files permissions 644. Here, the files under /usr/games/TuxWordSmith a re all having 777 : directories AND files.

I changed them in my machine with command lines using find and "-type d", and "-type f" options. I also moved it to /usr/share and left a link to it into /usr/games. I think that this is how it is done usually, to avoid having theses types of files spread in many different places in the system, but I may be mistaking of course, so it would be an idea to check about that.

The files under xdxf look very much to me like they belong to the game (dictionnaries from one language to another, not files for locales).

I have looked for locales (the stuff that will make the gui look like it belongs to one's language, any but English... )

I didn't find any, maybe there is no translation for the gui...

I seek further next time, and maybe try to find the dev's mail adress to ask information about that. I just found a video...

I wonder if it would not be a good idea, to write a desktop file for launching it in admin mode ? That should not be too difficult to do.

I'll use ktuss instead of gksu to start it as root.

The reason it's not launched with the -wx option is that not everyone may have wxPython installed correctly. But since we have wxPython as a dependency of TuxWordSmith, and clearly the -wx option works, I guess I can change the .desktop file to include the -wx parameter.

Hi,

I would like advice on how to change the place for the educational games in the menu. Up to now, we have:

* Main > More applications > Education > 11 entries, from "Educational suite GCompris", Etoys, Gcompris administration, Omnitux, Scratch, Tuxpaint, TuxMath, TuxMathScrabble, TuxType, childsplay, "i GNU it Flashcard Trainer";

* Main > Games > Boards > TuxWordSmith
* Main > Games > Other > Gamine, Omnitux, TuxMath, TuxMathScrabble, TuxType, childsplay

As you can see, the place under "Main > More applications > Education >" is too far from Main menu, and contains almost the same things as in "Main > Games > Other >", and this one is also too far from main menu, so I have 2 questions:


1) How to reorganise it on a practical point of view ?
2 ) How to organise it on a technical point of view ?

What I would like to get, is "Main > Educational games > All the entries". Do you think this is an idea to follow, or would you suggest something else, and at the end, how could it be done ?

This is a task that I'd like to go through for the one after the next (RC5, as now I'm being working on RC4), because it does not seem very easy to do, and may need more than just the few of us on this thread to succeed in gathering more theses entry menus.

I have been going through the /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu file and trying different combinations to create an "Education" sub-menu in the first level.  I will probably have to follow it up in one of my VBox guinea pigs before I bork my own system!!  However I get the feeling that it might be easier to create a sub-menu in /menu.xml like I did in my Astronomy Edition.  My rationale is that any added applications will have to deal with an altered menu path, and their default install setting won't cope.  If menus have to be manually edited for each install, then it would be easier and less messy with /menu.xml.  Otherwise you will have to edit each .desktop file to fit the new sub-menu arrangement in /etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu.  That's my thought at the moment, anyway

New for all : the next RC4 is almost ready but not quite. I have done 2 isos on a row and destroyed them : too big ! 740 MB the last one. I removed etoys and wp-squeak, a few python-devel and -trash and... coming with it, not sure it's enough. I'm removing tuxwordsmith : 208 MB on the hard drive ! 

I'm not even sure it's ready for schools, because I tried the French scrabble, and found many words I could not use as not in the dictionnary, and also mistakes in the translations to English... Not really what I would like to see. So if some of you want to make a DVD later on top of it and add more, feel free do to it. For this one, I'd really want to stick to the smaller than 700 MB.

I may reinstall etoys instead... even if I don't understand how to use it.

I feel for you on this one - the difference between 690mb and 710mb can be heart breaking.  And unfortunately there is no way of getting an accurate ratio, other than the 3:1 rule of thumb.

My nine year old daughter and I tackled that one a little while back.  You and us both - totally confused.  Even managed to get locked in/out, something!, and had to kill it to escape.  However I can see where it can work.  Don't dumb down - there are kids out there who will take to this and get a lot out of it.  It's a challenge, and the "smarter" kids need them.  The rest of us can then learn how it is done!!

I tried the file for menus, it didn't move one bite. I quit X and logged in again in between no difference. If I don't find a better approach, I'll use the Openbox menu way, as you suggested above. Bye the way it would be interesting to make it a standard...

Edit:  Live CD up and running on my new laptop.  All appears to be working at this point.  I'll set up an VirtualBox install tomorrow for further testing.

Hi Melodie,

I installed it today on my desktop computer.  When I clicked on the Install icon while logged in as root it just stopped about halfway through.  I then installed draklive-install in synaptic and after this the install went fine.  I will let my daughter test it out, but I wanted to let you know about the install event. 

It looks good.
