Hi,

First thread here : PCLinuxOS Edu RC2 Testers Wanted.
The next release is out.

This one comes with a kernel still in testing, the 2.6.37.pclos1.bfs.

The /etc/rc.d/rc.local has been modified to use the module zram instead of the ramzswap, which is not in the kernel anymore. Thanks mimas !! The result:

I forgot to remove 4 launchers from the /etc/skel/Desktop directory, therefore you will find them there again after install. Sorry !

Hi,

Small changes between the RC4 and RC5 : fixed the launcher for the installer, the rc.sysinit to not remove the launcher for the installer and it's files (commented the lines, uncomment /etc/rc.sysinit if you like, in the "Livecd section"), the icons are fixed on the desktop and configured to be placed same in the new users accounts.

I also removed etoys, squeak-vm, and added virtualbox-guest-additions.

I tested it in Virtualbox, install went fine, but at reboot I found that the "school" guest account has not been removed : I don't know why yet, so if you can tell me if you meet with the same issue, that would be nice. If you do and find out why, better ! ^^

Hi,

RC6 fixes the school account not removed after install, the haldaemon that didn't start in my Virtualbox install, and pcmanfm that didn't start from console.

It might be the last one until we get the images for the theme. You are welcome to particularly test all applications.

Hi,

RC7 is out. I hope the shutdown that rebooted is fixed (here it is). Added gtans, OOo4kids-manager... updated apt chain with aptupgrade, all is up to date, the kernel is 2.6.38.8.bfs.

2 glitches to be fixed, the gdm theme and the Grub theme. I hope to be able to fix the Grub theme which is the one from official PCLinuxOS, and I am waiting for Timeth to fix the GDM theme.

I have added the music for Gcompris. The kernel is 2.6.38.8.pclos3.bfs. The theme has been done by Timeth, based on Ruel24's wallpaper for PCLinuxOS Education.

For the new testers to come : there are no credentials written anywhere in this version. The aim will be to write a booklet which must be made available with the version, or a link to the booklet provided in the distro.

Then, the booklet will be dedicated to the school masters, parents, and even youngsters, provided that they know what they are doing.

dralive-install is not installed. Instead, it's rpm is provided in the cache directory of /root. Login as root, with user "root" and password "root", where you will find a README and a launcher which will start the install of draklive-install and start the install in the same move. All this have been prepared by mimas, with YAD, so there are little windows... The README does explain that it can be dangerous for the content of the hard drive to let the Install launcher too easily available when children are so fast in trying all what they can see.

PolicyKit.conf has also been configured to not let non admin user access to internal partitions without the root password. A window pops up to ask for it if you click on a partition which does not belong to the system (in the live as well as once installed).

I thank all who have been testing so far and helped make it what it is now.

internet connections, and a gcompris pdf made from the gcompris wiki.

Hi,

PCLinuxOS Education 2011 08 is ready for test. This version should be the last or almost the last, if anything wrong is found, it should be now minor.

The whole theme, done by Timeth with the base wallpaper provided by Ruel24 is at work, and the bugs found in Bonsai have allowed for corrections in Education as well. I hope you will enjoy it !

The thread should be about Edu RCx... I'll modify a bit the topic of this one for the next version. The other thread is not needed anymore, just for reviewing what needs to be corrected, incase...

What do you want to modify on the toolbar that you can't ? You can change it's place, color, add icons, size in width and in height... right click on it, right click on the icons, and you will discover several options.

I need to know what firmwares and non free stuff are missing in it, for next version. Who can look and tell me ?

I haven't mentioned much during this testing phase, but there is an 11 year old testing this (RC2) now.  She is my daughter and I told her to tell me about anything that does not work and so far she hasn't found anything.  I don't know why, but my wife, who is a school teacher, uses this "Edu" version quite a bit too.  It is nice to see her select it at the multiple OS boot selection screen.

I am downloading RC3 now and will install it for them to test further.

I know it was long to read, but I gave theses first in the list, and I really wanted to bring the complete list of changes.

I've had RC3 up and running the last couple of days.  Looking good, with the exception of MySqueak not doing anything.  By the way, I've also got LibreOffice up an running without a problem.

To all :    rubentje1991 has done a package for Omnitux, it's available. I'll wait for Aradalf, to review some tux packages before doing a new RC.

I invite all who wish to give Omnitux a try to download it and test it : rubentje1991 told me it's on iblio now.

I just tested a few minutes the "art and culture", where you have to choose the relevant music instrument. So far so good. What about the other activities ?
