Hi Mélodie,

Up and running and fully updated on my HP Slimline.  No problems noted at this point.  Shutdown works fine, no reboot problems, etc.

Hi Jeff, thanks.

Do you have hidden files showing in PCManFM ? I don't remember if I checked before remastering. And is it in that machine that you met with reboots after the shutdown had been performed, in Bonsai latest test versions or was it with another one ?

Last : do we keep Flash cards, or not ? I have no idea how to use it...  ::)

Thanks once more. :)

Mélodie,

Hidden files was already checked in PCManFM.  As for the machine I'm using, it's the same HP Slimline that had the shutdown, reboot problems with the Bonsai test.  Concerning Flash Cards, I have no idea as to how to use it either.  Perhaps you could find something else to take its place.

Excellent job on this iso! I tried it as a livecd today and it worked very well. I think that the flash cards should go, unless there are some pre-made examples for new users to use to demonstrate the usefulness of the software. Also the programming software, (I've forgotten what it's called), was too slow to be usable on a thumb drive. It may work just fine on an install.

I didn't install, but I tried the live CD on a P3 and an older AMD with only 320MB of RAM. Everything still works. Didn't try the flash cards. No shutdown problems on either machine. The older AMD was a bit sluggish, but was helped out with a 128MB ATI card.

Hi,

I am surprised about another thing. I have installed Edu on a USB stick with
PCLinuxOS Live USB. I wanted my son to try the Edu on his netbook, a Samsung
N210 with cpu Atom N450.

First the USB stick has taken the gfxboot from Openbox (which is where I
installed it), then the Plymouth does not work there. I suppose it's the
graphic card that may be too weak ?

The rest was working correctly as Live USB. We didn't have time to install it to the netbook yet.

Thanks for your reports. Next I'll go to request packages again ask for some updates : Childsplay and TuxMathScrabble seem to provide new versions.

For Flash Cards, I think I'll uninstall it until a new version and exemple of cards be out. One another thing is that for the French version I will need a bit space (usually it takes about 30 mo more in a live), and will have to uninstall something : I don't know what yet.

Regards,
Mélodie

Updated this morning and everything seems to be fine.

Two small things.
1. If you have Firefox on the CD - why have midori on the panel?
2. Just a preference. The "Digital Clock" setting on the panel - I set the clock format to %r   That gives the time as: 09:05:23 AM

Thanks for all the effort you have put into this. It looks like it is almost ready to be unleashed on the world.

Hi Earl,
1) hesitation. I think I will uninstall Midori. Firefox is more easy to configure for parental control (diverses plugins out there... )

2) I suppose I can leave it as is

Tim has sent me 2 new files for the plymouth splash, so that the progress bar be blue and not too close of the mask, on resolution screens which are not too large.

I have also posted 2 more packages updates requests today, and yesterday we had the great luck to see pinoc has updated Gcompris and Tuxmaths. We will be waiting for more feedbacks and a few more updates before the next (and last ?) test version.

Regards,
Mélodie

PS: someone available to start writing a presentation with the list of the main programs installed ? Thanks ! ;)

Hi Melodie,  up and running from liveCD right now on my main box, everything works as it should, ethernet recognized and connected (no wi-fi tested), all programs open and run, desktop looks good and very snappy, for some reason the fonts in Firefox look especially good and clear.

The clock is off for my timezone, not sure how to set correct time. The "%r" format mentioned in another post is nicer than the default format i think.

Seems like you mentioned maybe dumping the flash-card program, i would tend to agree, doesn't seem to do much.

Midori does seem a bit redundant with Firefox already onboard, and same for Deadbeef (although I like it for a music player a lot) with VLC already being onboard and being something of a do-everything media player. Not sure about having Midnight Commander available for the kids to play with, seems like it might be a good way to get files wiped out :D ;D

All in all, a really great system, bright, colorful, full of fun programs, I like it a lot, and will be sharing it with friends who have kids, my neighbor is a schoolteacher too, and this looks perfect for the young 'uns!

Beautiful work mon amie :)

*edit* Almost forgot, very small thing: On the login screen, if you enter an incorrect username and/or password, you get a small message of text about the error, on my screen, the error message is a little too high, so it's obscured by the login graphic and hard to read.

What is it you're looking for? General descriptions? Specific descriptions of what each program does? What format for the doc? Pdf or odt or abw? (No, not docx!)

What about drak-something in PCC ? If you install it you should get a window for timezone configuration at post-install. If you have it on USB installed with PCLinuxOS Live USB, you can do the change in the persistant mode boot.

The format "%r" : is the one that does what ?

To use it we have to create the Flash cards ourselves. The website of the project has none. We also have Flash cards (memory cards) in other games among thoses installed.(Saw that when looking at some changelogs, but I don't remember which one right now).

I can gain space there but not much... Else, in a former version (French one I think) I had added a package for the pictures management. I feel it is missing in this version. I would need Edu to get down to about 670 MB because the locales need space (French : about 30 MB)

PCManFM as well. Midnight Commander should stay, it's a "all in one" tool for the administrator... Else, the kids could erase files from the /home/user of this system, but they can't access other partitions unless they have the root password. I guess we will tell the admins to create a real admin password, not one just for fun. (In a booklet that is yet to be written).

Could you attempt to tweak the file /usr/share/gdm/themes/pclosedu/pclosedu.xml ? You will find this block text:

Code: [Select]
<!-- error messages -->
<item type="label" id="pam-error">
<pos anchor="c" x="50%" y="500" width="450" height="50"/>
<normal font="Verdana 8" color="#e84949"/>
<text></text>
</item>

Try changing the values for font (type and size), color, and position, x, y, width and height. If you get the right look, bring it back, I'll test in my machine and make the change.

Thanks for this feedback !

Hi djohnston,

No specific format, just a post here in the thread, or in a new post if you wish. A description of the distribution, such as theses ones:
http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=180

http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=188

I want to ask the members of the dev mailing list to test it at next version (which I hope could be the last test version) and point to the presentation, with a screenshot for the desktop.

(Before doing a last version I will wait to see if we have one or two more updates on edu packages and on important packages. It is probably a matter of a few days, and during this time I would like to work again on Bonsai to try to get one that works).

Thanks !
