Compro T300 and E700 video/TVcards install struggle
« on: January 25, 2011, 07:08:15 PM »
I have KDE2010.12 fully updated. Compro Videomate E700 pci card left over from XP days where it works fine, at this stage little luck with Linux (I expected that, but have left the card in its slot)

Then got a chance to try out a Compro T300 card which by now looked like it should be a a piece of cake  ;D however that way of thinking is also a warning to me.  Well seems like it will have to be done the hard way.

I am new to installing TV cards but not using a DVB-T USB dongle. The card seems to do all the right things on install.  I will start with dmesg output.

From searching on the internet this seems to indicate all is well, but I don't seem to be able to make contact with the card.

I installed w_scan and this fails to find any card? (the example shows the German (DE) but same result with (AU) which I will retest when I get back to the OS I am using)

Code: [Select]

At this stage any hints appreciated just to get my brain out of a groove.

It is slow going with the T300 card but I have found out that I had the bad luck of trying my first attempts on a system that has mythTV installed. From internet search I have found that apparently mythTV monopolises card(s) so when I tried to be cautious and test the T300 by running via meTV and/or kaffeine no go.

I have now moved the test to a copy of MiniMe where I have installed kaffeine and VLC.  I have tried VLC no luck and decided that kaffeine must be working before I move to any other application.

I go to:

1..  Television > Configure Televeison > General Options > Update Scan data over Internet (seems to be working)

2.. Devise1 TAB > Shows my device is a TDA10046H DVB-T and source is AutoScan (also very likely)

Back to Televison TAB

1.. Select Channels > Start Scan  (seems to work signal and snr keeps changing takes quite some time)

I did expect the scan result to show up in the right hand pane, as scan progressed, but nothing ever shows here.

Code: [Select]
/home/gert/.kde4/share/apps/kaffeine
In this directory is a number of usefull files for kaffeine

frontendName=Philips TDA10046H DVB-T

[config]

timeout=1500

The red in above is more for my own info to remind me that the card shows this in lspci

scanfile.dvb

T 219500000 7MHz 2/3 NONE QAM64 8k 1/8 NONE

Will spare you the content, approx 8000 lines of information, worldwide channel listing I think, including the Australians that I will be needing.  I also thought I had selected Australia in the scan ?? I have just listed one section of what is in this file. Starting to wonder if this is correct.

These two above are empty.

Any hints from T300 owners?

I am going to re-visit this topic as I have gained a bit more understanding.  I have gathered more information and from that I have inferred that the card is installed and should work but the output is nil.

What I would like to do is rmmod -v as follows

Quote
rmmod saa7134-alsa
rmmod saa7134-dvb
rmmod saa7134
rmmod tuner
rmmod tda9887

and then modprobe them back in again.  I do however not get out of the starting blocks as modules in use

Quote
[root@KDE-mini ~]# rmmod -v saa7134-alsa
ERROR: Module saa7134_alsa is in use
[root@KDE-mini ~]#

there is an option -f but dire warning of pending disaster. Therfor before I do I would like some advice?

How do I go about it?

[root@KDE-mini ~]# cat /etc/modprobe.preload

Edit:
Doing no pre-load of saa7134 and rebooting has made no difference the modprobe -r

There is a slight change, not sure what the is casuing this, perhaps the change in pre-load. The DVB-T card number is autodetected correctly I believe though not as an E700 but as T-300, a bit unhappy about this but here are the data.

probably you need to unload first some other module which actually "require" saa7134".

also, this could be handy:

I think now that I am off on the wrong track, will explain below, but here are the 'depends'

Quote
[root@KDE-mini gert]# modprobe --show-depends saa7134

I have dropped in more information in my previous thread (for my own record later, when I save the thread) and from that information I conclude that the card is very close to running.  This time however I have looked harder at the tuner that has been detected, this is different to previous as I am not sure that a tuner has been 'installed' previously.

Making an assumption that the TV card is installed properly then I should now be able to run a scan utitlity (have w_scan here) of some sort and this should pick up valid frequencies if the tuner works??

This is where I think I have the problem, I have run w_scan for AU and it has not picked up valid freqs.  I propose to stay with card 70 and then just bash my way through likely tuners.  This would be my best effort with my current knowledge  ;D

I am not sure where my brain is, I will blame it on the wee hours this way.

I must ask, is this the line that tells which module is the 'pack leader'    ;D

yes, to better say the following show you that saa7134 is used from saa7134_alsa and from saa7134_dvb
Code: [Select]
saa7134               137245  2 saa7134_alsa,saa7134_dvb

The temptation was too big before I go, perhaps it would have been better if I left it for the night.   :D
Did I misunderstand? I have removed saa7134_dvb but still can't take out saa7134?

Hmmmmm,  I think I will start pulling out hardware. I have tried two other KDE-mini systems slightly different configurations but same problem, modprobe -r the last system was my test of kernel 3.2.x which is very basic.

Quote
[root@KDE-mini-kernel3x gert]# modprobe -r saa7134_dvb
[root@KDE-mini-kernel3x gert]# lsmod |grep saa7134_dvb
[root@KDE-mini-kernel3x gert]# modprobe -r saa7134_alsa
FATAL: Module saa7134_alsa is in use.
[root@KDE-mini-kernel3x gert]#

Above is meant to show that saa7134_dvb was removed, the second lined returned nothing so the module is gone.
The 3rd line, trying to remove the saa7134_alsa no luck.

Code: [Select]
lsmod | grep saa7134_alsawill show you the dependency of saa7134_alsa   ;)
