If you insist using your downloaded version, we have to know in what format you downloaded it...
=> RPM, tar.gz, ....? (if we want to help you...)

Remember, this can make your system unsupported, because of your system and configuration, we won't be able anymore to copy your situation.....
=> it won't be a 'normal' PCLinuxOS system anymore

And the application is not available here: http://portablelinuxapps.org/

Did you try the repository spout.ussg.indiana.edu - as suggested by Aradalf?  ???
=> that one should work (remember, only one repo at a time!)
- else (if urgently needed) I can send the needed PCLinuxOS-unetbootin-rpm(s) from my local repo, which you can put in /var/cache/apt/archives, and then install via Synaptic (which will be tomorrow morning; now 18u49 here, and going to music school and French lessons this evening - after that too late to get my external HD, and upload it here)  :P

Well, you guys have taught me something.  I've always used our synaptic for downloads but didn't realise I could be doing damage if I went outside this.  I only deviated as I'm going away for a bit soon and wanted to take PCLinux with me and the idea of having it on a flash drive appealed to me.  I might have known it wouldn't be straightforward.

However, I can take our OS on its live cd so there's really nothing lost.  Please accept my thanks for straightening me out.

I'll wait until our repos are fixed and then try again.  Doubtless I'll have questions about what to do in a new thread.  Till then.....

If you want PCLOS on a flash drive then try using the utility on the livecd to do it .......  PCLinuxOS-liveusb .....

You can still download files. Did you try using the repo rubentje1991 and I suggested? http://spout.ussg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/

The repo I normally use for my downloads is http://ftp.ch.debian.org/mirror/pclinuxos/apt/ and it's still doing its thing.  Don't be afraid to try different ones - just one at a time.

Right, I got the download from Indiana. as suggested.  I used PCLinuxOS usb creator to format my flash drive and all seems to have gone well, I think.  When I open the drive, I get 'lost+found'.  When I click on that I get 'could not enter folder /media/Kingston'

Would this be because I haven't  installed PCLinuxOS on the flash drive yet?  Or is there something else?

When I check the flash drive details I get:

SDB1
Label Kingston pclinuxos
Type:  journalised FS: ext 3
Mounted
Partition booted by default.

Which seems to have gone to plan.

That happens to me every single time. The lost+found directory is set with root permissions. But it disappears anyway once you put PCLinuxOS on it.

You did not use the USB creator to format the drive .....  maybe PCLOS Control Centre?

Anyway .....  Lost+Found is a root privileged directory.
Now run the live USB creator to put PCLOS on the removable drive.

Just 19,

You're right of course.  I used PCC to format the flash drive.  Sorry about that.

I've just tried to load PCLinuxOS on the drive but got:  no UUID was found for LiveOS partition.  We have to abort.

I dunno what UUID means but it does look as if my formatting wasn't correct, doesn't it?

It is the unique identifier for the partition.
It is used to ensure that the chosen partition is the one to be used.

First I would try again just in case of some glitch or other. If that fails in a similar fashion then ......

.... please, in a terminal, gain root privileges (su  <enter>), and as root user do

fdisk -l

Then you will see what your removable device is identified as .....  /dev/sdX ...  where X is some letter.

Then do

fdisk -l  /dev/sd? .....  use the correct letter .......  and post back the output please.

That might help us to find the root of the problem.

regards.

I've got a bit further now.  I carefully formatted the flash drive again using PCC and found I got the same results as before.  However, Live USB Creator then took me on a bit but I got stuck at selecting the iso to install on the flash drive.  The only iso I could produce was that of my printer, Kyocera!

I am trying to copy PCLinuxOS from the installed version on my hdd.  Should I be loading the live cd and take the iso from that?  (I'm not even sure what an ISO actually is - International Standards Organisation?)

It's after midnight here so will take this up again tomorrow.  Many thanks for helping out, Just19.

An ISO is the image file of the Operating System. It is used to burn bootable CDs.

If you are using the live CD for this, you have a choice to select the Operating System files or selecting an ISO which is stored on some partition.
That ISO must be a PCLOS image.

I still want to see the results of the commands I posted previously.

Hi again,

Can't sleep!  I also can't figure out how to copy the contents of my Konsole terminal to this reply.  However, the final sentence is:

Disk /dev/sdb1 doesn't contain valid partition table.

Hope that helps

Copy from Konsole...
=> just select it with your mouse pointer, right click, copy
then paste in the forum (in e.g. quote tags)

@Just19

I know the existance of Live USB Creator - and I used it once or twice;
but I stay using UnetBootin
=> this way my flash drive keeps formatted in e.g. fat32; it boots up PCLinuxOS when needed, else I can just use it as a flash drive in Windows/Linux, and put my files between my unetbootin-stuff when I want (and when I just need more space, I just can delete the contents in Linux AND Windows, and place it back later with UnetBootin (in Windows or in Linux)

This is because most of the other people on school uses Windows, so I can use my USB drive there (else it's worth nothing there  ::))

EDIT: And I know you need to use Live USB Creator to get a persistant installation on USB (beautiful tool for that purpose!)  8)
