SOLVED how do I make a download usable?
« on: January 24, 2011, 01:50:57 AM »
I've downloaded Unetbootin to my Home directory, downloads folder.  Left or Right clicking doesn't seem to give me choices which would bring the app to where I can actually use it.  Any suggestion as to what I do now would be gratefully received.

OK, I'll ask a silly question - Unetbootin is in the repository - synaptic can install it.  Why have you downloaded it?

I'll second this. Why did you download Unetbootin? It's in the repos. Just fire up Synaptic and install it. In addition, installing from outside the repos is not recommended and isn't supported.

Install from repository (using Synaptic)!

It's available there, and it just works after installing
(I use it many times during a year - yesterday I tried it, and successful used it, so...)

Don't know how the syncing is going of the local mirrors, but maybe you just have to wait for a couple of hours / days before you can do an update and do the install (because of the move of ibiblio)

The syncing shouldn't affect installing new packages. A few mirrors may be down though, due to them still syncing when ibiblio went down and they got corrupted.

Nothing here:

(I have a local repo - so I haven't digged in the other mirrors)

Well mine still work:
http://spout.ussg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/pclinuxos/apt/
http://spout.ussg.indiana.edu/linux/pclinuxos/megagames/apt/

But of course there are no new updates.

Indeed, the only working one as far as I know (because it's always more than a week behind the other mirrors) - useful now, and I forgot to mention it when I reread my posts

Thanks for giving the repo...  :)

It is? So I've been a week behind in updates all year long? But how can that be if the sync age was 5 when I did the repo speed test 4-5 months ago? Maybe it's 5 days behind?

Can be true.....
But it IS certainly some days behind e.g. ftp.heanet.ie (and thus also behind ibilio)
I use heanet to sync against my local repo (more up to date, and faster over here)

With a repo speed test, spout.ussg.indiana.edu is the fastest for me, and ibiblio is the second fastest. Obviously I shouldn't use ibiblio.

I downloaded unetbootin because I've been having trouble with the repositories.  I get messages about repositories unavailable etc, etc, which the previous posters may have explained.

So, as I would like to be able to put PCLinux on a flash drive, how, please, do I open and use my downloaded version of unetbootin?

Explain what trouble you've been having with the repos. But don't use your downloaded Unetbootin!

ibiblio, the parent of all mirrors, which we are asked to not use, has been moving servers, causing some delay in the update of repos.

eventually it will all settle down again and everything will resynch.  in the meantime, please possess yourselves in patience while the move takes place.
