Desktop background blurry (SOLVED)
« on: January 23, 2011, 04:18:10 AM »
Why is it that when I set wallpaper other than the default images it is blurry?  Even the pictures from the official PCLOS wallpaper site are blurry.  By default I mean the ones that PCLOS comes with.

I can only guess that the resolution of the pics doesn't match the resolution of your desktop.

What's your screen size? What are the proportions of the pictures you've tried to use?

My desktop is 1074X768 right now. I tried making it bigger but that only made it worse.  For some reason even pictures that have worked on other installs of PC don't work.  I have never had this happen before.

Is it an LCD or a CRT monitor? If LCD (flat screen), you should set it up to use its native default resolution.

Have you tried 1024x768? It's a much more common screen size than 1074x768 and it's very close (only 50 pixels shorter in height) It may look ok.

What is the make of your monitor? How old is it? Is it only the wallpapers that are blurry?

Are you using KDE?
If you're using KDE Effects, did you try disabling the 'blur'-effect;

A screenshot would be nice too (if the blurry thing is visible on it  :))

OK, I put in the wrong screen size, I am running 1024X768.  I am using Gnome, though if this problem can't be fixed I'll go back to KDE since I never had a problem with it.  Only the wallpaper is blurry everything else is sharp.  My monitor is a Dell M871s.  As far as a screen shot I got one but I don't know how to post it.

That sounds more normal. But do you also have 1024x768 versions of the pics you are trying to use as wallpapers? Or at least larger pictures with the same proportions?

To post a screen shot you first have to upload it to a site like, for instance, www.postimage.org, and then add a link to the image on that site to your post. Most sites of this kind will let you choose between a few alternative formats for the link, but actually you only need the URL of the uploaded picture.

The wallpaper in your screenshot looks like a a relatively tiny picture that has been magnified too much. You need a larger original.

I figured out what I did, when I save the picture I only saved the thumbnail then tried to blow it up for the whole desktop.  Thank you for all of your help it is fixed now.  I feel pretty stupid.

That's not stupid. We've all made comparable mistakes. (If we didn't learn anything from our mistakes, on the other hand ...)

I think you have a ways to go before you earn the right to feel "stupid" about something. Quite a few of us (myself included) have already got you beat.   ;D ;D
