YouCanToo Repo?
« on: January 21, 2011, 06:34:05 PM »
I got the following message when using the YouCanTo repo:

Quote
The repository might be no longer available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and the correct writing of the repository address in the preferences.

Did I miss news/info regarding this repo?

I might have put it differently - but this is a jolly good question.  ;)

I do.  Since I don't use KDE at all I can not relate - but I do understand.

Something else to consider:

KDE 3 might be more popular than some might want to admit.  Why do I say that?  Well - if all the bandwidth is used up it has to be used up by somebody, in this case KDE 3 users would come to mind.

Since there no updates anymore ... and Trinity seems to be a rather sedate project, maybe youcantoo's KDE 3 server has become somewhat of a secret tip-off for all KDE 3 lovers ...

You gotta love a good conspiracy theory ...  ;D

Hi, guys,:)

Yes, I continue to use KDE3.5 on my laptop.  My desktop runs KDE 4.5 and is fully updated.

I'd like to  move the laptop to KDE 4.5.   But, it runs, I have some files I need to backup, and it's not my main system, etc.

I plan on buying a new laptop this year.  That one will run KDE 4.5. I'll move files from old to new than figure out what I want to do with the old...upgrade to 4.5, go with LXDE, XFCE, E17, etc.

I hit the repo last night because I wanted to install KMyMoney.  I was curious to see if my data file from KMyMoney in KDE 4.5 would run in KyMyMoney in KDE 3.5.

Hi georgetoon, a while back I had the same situation that you have now.  I had kde3.5 on a laptop and I kept it there because it did not want to, or it could not - due to hardware limitations, run kde 4.x.

I installed a lightweight PCLinuxOS, on it and it runs better and faster than kde3.5 ever did.

Sorry to go off topic...

KDE 3.t5 runs fine on this laptop. And that's the point.  If it ain't broke...

I'll just have tot wait for YouCantoo's repo to come back online.:)

i remember that there was only one real reason to have kde3, quanta, it seems that is still the case

other than that, i can't think on a reason to have kde3

if it doesn't run on older hardware the options like gnome, lxde, xfce and e17 should be considered

the old kde and the old pclinux have many holes, in kernel and in kde apps

any reason to have it, you should make them disappear because it is 2 years dead now

don't wait like that user asking for help on a 5 year old distro dead that won't let him save his own files on a backup

i ram last week a celeron with 512 of ram and kde4 worked impressively well except for the video card, a sis showing what only i could describe as rain on screen, except that older and limited hardware can work with pclinux 2010 very well, if kde4 is not your thing there is options

the other option is buy repos on dvd, it seems that is still posible to find 2009 repos on dvd to buy, keep a local repo and avoid internet usage for this specific task

Remer when I said, "If it ain't broke...?"

Well, control Center in KDE 3.5 comes up, but none of the icons on the left hand side display.

So, I might finally have a reason to move up to KDE 4.5.

If all else fails, you can always buy the dvd set from on-disk.com!
I did this simply so I can support some friends who have come to love and rely on PCLOS, but are not really "computer literate".
Whatever folks think and say on this forum, just the fact that they use the forum means they are at least PREPARED to fiddle.  I've got to like KDE4, but I cannot agree that it's as user friendly as it's predecessor.
