"SOLVED" Another Sound Problem - Sound no longer works ? ?
« on: January 19, 2011, 07:43:48 AM »
I can boot up into my user name and the computer sound works normal - meaning I can hear sound coming from the speakers from web pages like utube and can hear the sound when the OS loads up at startup.

However, when my wife goes into her user name her sound no longer works at all even though it used to work fine.  Then if we leave my wife's session and return to my own session my sound will no longer work either.   If I restart the computer my session sound will work again but never my wife's.

Under the PCL 2009 I used to be able to go to the PCL control center and stop ALSA and Sound.  I have noticed I cannot stop ALSA from the control center anymore.  Anyway I have tried to kill the applications that were using sound and reboot but after spending many hours on this nothing seems to be working.   Can anyone tell me what to try to get her sound to work again since I know the hardware is able to play sound.

Have you compared the mixer settings in her account to the settings in your account ?

You can check if alsa launches at boot in Control Center by going to System; Manage system services.  You can turn it on/off there.  I'm not sure what KDE4 uses, but gnome-alsamixer does a good job on most other things.

Yesterday I got it to work by Killing all applications and stopping "Sound" and "Alsa" within PCL Control Center.  Then I restarted Kmix and sound was worked fine again for several hours.

However after restarting the computer she does not have sound again and this time I have been unable to fix it by doing the exact same things that fixed it yesterday (what I mention above).

So I am back to no sound.   I get normal sound from one user and not on my wife's user.   I don't understand why when you fix something in Linux it doesn't stay that way.

I also get this message :

Removed Sound Devices
"KDE detected that one or more internal sound devices were removed.
Do you want KDE to permanently forget about these devices?
This is the list of devices KDE thinks can be removed:
Output: Dell Sound Blaster Live! (EMU10K1X Front)"

I have not checked "YES" because it says "permanently".  I have been checking NO.

How should I try to fix it so sound works for my wife?

Maybe try setting up a new user and see if the problem replicates in this new user.
If it does not then she may need to establish a new user account for herself.

I have had this problem on my desktop machine, but never on my laptop.  They have different sound cards.   My solution when this happened was to use the PCC >system>services, and try to stop alsa.  It would fail with two PID shown.  I would then Menu>Runprogram and put in:  kill Pid1 pid2.  substitute the numbers you got trying to stop alsa.  Then start alsa again.  Also you will have to Menu>Sound>kmix.   kmix was always one of the PIDs I had to kill.

I have not had the problem since I updated to KDE 4.5.4.   So...has the system been updated????
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

Don't know if this helps in this case, but it's worth trying.

I elected to check "YES" this time through.  I don't know what all it does but this time when I went through the routine of "Kill"ing  the sound applications and reloading "alsaconf" in the terminal I have ended up having sound now.

I will not mark it solved just yet since I don't expect it to last.   I am wondering if the use of Skype has contributed to this problem since we got a Webcam for Christmas and the sound issues seemed to start shortly thereafter.

Anyway thanks for the offers of help.  That is the only thing that keeps me moving ahead (more like 1 step forward and 2 steps backward sometimes)   :D
