Dropbox ?!?
« on: January 18, 2011, 05:58:55 AM »
I installed Dropbox from the rep. - not the Nautilus one as I am using Openbox.  I set up an account dropped an iso in the public folder, and watched the upload bar on conky tick away. Eventually I decided to get the weblink - no Dropbox listing in right-click.  I went to Dropbox site and no uploaded file!  Dropbox seems to launch but not visible.  I don't run a panel or sys-tray.  From terminal no info.  Looked at previous posts - tried "Dropbox start i" - no luck.  Any ideas?  All I want to do is upload a remastered iso I have done.  Is there an alternative to Dropbox?

The right-click menu option is a plug-in for KDE ......  not sure how to achieve the function with other DEs.

Maybe post in the section dealing with your DE ......  someone there is likely to have come across the problem previously.

Spideroak is also in the repository ..... never used it so cannot comment.

regards.

I just uploaded a file ( 150 MB ) and it took 3 hours.  An iso would take quite some time.  Maybe you were too impatient.  You won't see the files on their site until the upload is completed.

I don't have the icon problem using Zen-mini.

You can find several alternate free file hosting sites with google.  Dropbox is as good or better than any of them.  Most restrict you to smaller files and, if they go more than 15 days without a download, your files get dropped/deleted.

A friend of mine is a drop box evangelist and finally I started using it a week or so ago.  I have had no problems with it at all, but it is true that files take a long time to upload.

There should be a little green circle with checkmark in it on the dropbox tray icon to indicate upload/sync is complete.

I am not quite sure what you are getting at regarding the "no dropbox listing in right click".  When I right-click the dropbox tray icon, I get a useful context menu including "launch dropbox website".

Thanks for the responses - Dropbox finally worked.  Well, it was always working but that wasn't obvious. There were two issues here.  First, as I mentioned, I am running OB nude.  No panels, taskbars, trays, nothing.  So Dropbox runs in the background with no indicators other than terminal telling me its already running if I try to launch it again.  This may be a foible of OB.  Second, as suggested, a long time to upload.  Originally I had given the file (850mb) ten hours to upload.  Nothing.  I then left it running overnight and from what conky suggests it didn't have to run much longer to complete the upload.  It was almost there but the Dropbox site gives no info until a file is fully loaded.  Anyway it's up I'll post a thread in "MiniMe/ZenMini/E17/Openbox" if anyone wants to try it.

Glad to hear you got it working.

Yeah, uploads are pretty slow.  That's why I'm thinking of starting a samba or ftp file server, so I can access MY files (ALL of them) from anywhere, and I don't have to upload them onto a webserver controlled by some unknown dudes who run dropbox.  Of course, opening up my files to access from afar opens up potential security issues, but if I do it right (carefully) I should be able to mitigate most security fears.

.....  and then you will have to put up with your very slow upload speed as your 'server' uploads to wherever you are .....  I don't see the point .....  seems to me that to upload them to Dropbox or other such location, while you have the time to do so, will allow you to d/load them from anywhere at max speed provided by Dropbox or other .....  thus saving considerable time when out and about .......

Of course that is on the assumption that your upload speed is limited by your ISP as mine is .....

the other nice thing about dropbox is local network awareness.  If you have several computers on the network with the same dropbox credentials it moves locally rather than through the internet.

Yes, my upload speed is set at less than one quarter the speed of download.  Just seems to be a typical standard across plans.  Why I'll never know!

Reason is, ISPs don't want their basic clients providing content.  Cause they can make more money by providing content themselves.  Most ISP's are also content providers, too.  Telus, rogers, bell... You get the idea...

For Dropbox? A free subscription is 1 GB, and more free GB can be earned by referring other members. In addition, a Getting Started List is provided on the site, which if completed, gives 250 megs extra.

I believe it starts at 2gb, the more people you refer gets you more storage or you can pay for it.  I think I'm up to 4 or 5 gb now.

If you are like me and have about 8 email addresses (I actually have more, but forgot them and they are collecting cyber-dust, cyber-cobwebs, and spam on some lonely server), you can get your account up to a few more Gb pretty quickly by referring to your own email addresses.

That works to a point, but it probably helps to have multiple machines and IP's too. I'm not sure how they are tracking it but when I tried more than 2 referrals from the same PC and IP I got a message with the third that the "email was not authorized" or something to that effect. Though it could have been the domain that was the issue I suppose. All I'm saying is be smart about it, you may need to spread things out a bit. They actually have other plans they don't advertise (10GB for $4.99 a month) too, if you send a support email (just ask if they have any other plans available) they will give you links to more plan options other than $9.99 that they choose not to publicize.

Dropbox owns by the way, love it and use it everyday. Glad it's in the PCLOS repositories!
