GoogleEarth Crashes machine, eats all memory! Google earth
« on: January 18, 2011, 02:47:02 AM »
Hi, I have installed GoogleEarth from repository but the machine just froze after a short time when it got to tips screen on starting

Running qps I found that over a gig (and climbing ) of RAM was allocated to

X :20 -audit 0 -deferglyphs 16 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:20.Xauth -nolisten ecp vt9

On the off chance it was a gl thing I then tried installing the no gl version but no options appear on menu for opening non gl mode.

Any ideas appreciated. I am running the following.

ASUS M4A78LT-M LE AMD 760G Socket AM3 DVI VGA Out 8 CHannel Audio MATX Motherboard (With Integrated ATI Radeon 3000 )
AMD Athlon II X4 640 Socket AM3 3GHz Kingston 2GB (2x1GB) DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Blu Memory Kit CL9 1.5V

Google Earth on PCLOS is kind of in limbo at the moment.

If you do a search for it you will find that there have been two or three threads about it.

I don't remembered all the details but it is hardware specific among other things.

On my quad core Phenom machine with an ASUS motherboard it is working again after doing whatever it said in one of the threads. But, some functions do not work and if used will make it crash or hang.

I know that Tex is aware of the problem and when a stable version becomes available, we will have it.

In the mean time, just don't use the functions that cause problems.

I would list the ones that I have found but normally by the time I see the symptom, I don't remember what I was doing when it appeared and if I do remember, I won't by the time that I am in a position to write it down.

Hi ThirdofSix, thanks for reply, I did check forum but couldn't see anything with the same memory eating problem.
I shall sit and twiddle my thumbs for a while and hope for the new version soon I can only do a limited amount of typing due to RSI and have to save it for my main work)
cheers

Hi veronicathecow, I had exactly the same problem.

For me disabling the startup tips helped. If you are quick and close the startup tip window as soon as it appears Google Earth should run normally and you should be able to permanently disable the startup tips under Tools/Options/General (I'm using a german localization so I might not be correct regarding english menu and tab titles). At least for me this helped...

Hopefully Google Earth 6 will it make into the repos soon though!

Oh, darn, clicked the link and killed a kitty! :)

I guess the tip will work anyway, but I don't mess with Google Earth, so I wouldn't know for sure.

Hi Neal, it happened to quick for me to disable it (quad core 3gb machine), tried a number of times so the config edit worked nicely
