From MSMoney to KMyMoney
« on: January 17, 2011, 05:46:36 PM »
I'm thinking of moving my financial files from MSMoney to KMyMoney.

I read a review here and the author suggests making a brand new start.

Don't do any conversion from MSMoney to KMyMoney, just start using KMyMoney.

"Once I made the decision to start fresh, it was very easy to start using My new finance program. If you’ve used Money or Quicken, you probably won’t have much trouble starting a new file in KMyMoney. It didn’t take long to set up all of my active accounts."

Has anyone done this?  Any problems?

Also, how is the develpment of KMyMoney progressing?  The last thing I want to do is make the switch and then not have it moving forward with KDE 4.5, etc.

I've been using Kmymoney for two or three years, after migrating to PCLOS from Windows and Quicken.   You should not have any problems if you are familiar with a similar program (not familiar with MSMoney myself).

I've set up Kmymoney several times for people, the irony I find is that the easiest file to work with when downloading from the bank is the MSMoney format.  ;D

You'll have little to no problems I'm sure Georgetoon.

Guys,

Right after i posted, I downloaded and installed KMyMoney from the repo. I then st up a new file with all my accounts, etc. Openign balaneces are as of 1/1/2011.  I have some entries to make, but l'll do these little by liittle to gt caught up.  So, I'll be doing some double entry work in MSMoney and KMyMoney for the next month or so.  No matter, It'll allow me to become familiar with the program.

So far, it looks great!

The only downside to this and a potential deal-breaker is the lack of password protection. Or, did I overlook this? I don't see it in the help area (and the index option is not available, so I can't search).  I'm very used to having a password to open my file. I like the security.  Sometimes, family members sit at the keyboard when they visit. it's okay, It's Linux.:)  But, I forget to log out and log into the guest account, well...the last thing I want is for my personal accounting info to spill out.

Well, good news!:) I'm all caught up from 1/1/2011!:)  Now, all I need to do is make entries in both programs as a go forward.  In a month or so, things should balance out on both and I'll be free of MSMoney.

I'm looking over the program and I really like the "Cash In Wallet" account. :)

It appears when I deposit a check at the bank and remove some, I can move it into the "Cash in Wallet" account and keep track of what I have there.  If I make a cash purchase, I can track it using this account.

Nice, nice option (if I've interpreted it correctly). :)

One last note before I turn in...i did a google search and I believe that KMyMoney does not have password protection. Rather, it uses GPG encryption.

I see this in the configuration tool, but it's grayed out.  So, i assume I need GPG enabled or installed on my system.

KmyMoney is a great piece of software. I have been using it for years. Anyway as regards encryption, as well as gnupg you need to install the package pinentry-qt4, see this post for more details.

In terms of setting up kmymoney for encryption take a look at:

KMyMoney really is terrific!:)  It was easy to set up and in no time I was entering transactions.

I'm at the office and have a copy of MSMoney running on this Win7 system.  I exported my accounts as QIFs.  I'll take them home and create a new KMyMoney file and import the QIFs and see how things match up.  It may or may not work. if not, I'll just archive the MSMoney file and keep running KMyMoney from January 1, 2011.  If the export/import works, then I can continue forward with all my info intact.:)  We'll see.:)

If KMyMoney runs in windows, all the better when I'm at the office.:)  I can check things at both locations.

I"ve been using Kmymoney for a long time.  "Cash in Wallet" sounds like a good thing.  I've always had a problem with how to keep track of the "folding money" I spend.  I take about $200 out every month, and just put it under "Miscellaneous" s

@georgetoon.   You say this is an account?   I don't find it, but I may have removed it a long time ago, not knowing what it was for.  So I guess I need to set this up as a category?  I will need to set  it up for me and the wife, one for her one for me.

I'll have to have a look at it again.  I may not be using the proper term. "Cash In Wallet" looks like an account.  It was already in place when I created my new user file.  Then again, it may be a category.  Sorry for the confusion.

I double checked. "Cash in Wallet" is an asset account.

Also, I tried importing Qifs from MSMoney but they didn't translate too well. So, I''l take the blogger's advice (mentioned above) and just start KMyMoney fresh.  I'll be doing some double entry for some time. But that's okay. The real challenge will come when I balance for the first time.:)

I don't have the "Cash in Wallet" option, but I do have a "Cash" account which I use. Bit strange that our systems are different, either that or you have found a function that I haven't come across.... Can you explain where the Cash in wallet option is - maybe a screenshot? I am intrigued....

I'm at the office right now.  I'll try and get a screen shot this evening. I just did a search for one on the net and nothingn came up.

Again, not sure how this account came up. It was just there.  it must have been created when I first set up KMyMoney. I selected to set up the most common accounts for general/household use.  I'm going to try using it.  I've already given it an opening balance and when I pull cash out to buy something, will record it.  I'm just trying to decide if I should use round numbers or take change into account.

For instance, I bought a coffee this morning at Sheetz. it's .99.  I pulled a dollar out of my wallet and got a penny back.  I had 36 bucks in there, now I have 35.  The dollar is gone, so I'm thinkng I'll deduct the buck from the ledger instead of .99.  Because, I only have 35 dollars in my wallet.  Make sense?  I won't track the change. It won't be a true picture, but I'm only concerned with the folding money in my wallet and not the coin.

Or perhaps I can create a new account for change.  When I get the change back, I'll throw it in a container and record it in KMyMoney as a transfer/deposit to that account.  It'd be interesting to see how much the change builds over time. And I'll have an accurate accounting for how much is there.

I've decided to not use Kgpg for encyrpting my KMyMoney file.  I'm afraid I'll wipe the key and not be able to recover the file. Plus, I'm not able to get it to work properly.

Rather, I'd settle for password protecting a folder. Is this possible? zip something and then assign a password to it?
