PDF Reader for Phoenix
« on: January 17, 2011, 01:44:41 PM »
I will be installing Phoenix onto my system once I finish working with the LiveCD (as I'm doing now to write this message) and becoming familiar with Xfce. I have been using another distro based on Gnome. However, the PCLOS forum has impressed me so I've decided to return to using PCLOS. It was my first Linux OS in 2007 using KDE 3. My system is now somewhat ancient and Xfce appears to run great from the LiveCD so it's my choice. KDE 4... is just toooooooo big.

Nevertheless, my question involves PDFs. I seem to accumulate a few of them via various sources and need and/or want to read them. This LiveCD offers to open a PDF file (PC Magazine January issue) using the GIMP! It may work but a graphical programme to read text???

Is there a real PDF reader available when I install Phoenix? Do I have to get Evince and its many additional files from Gnome? I did search the Phoenix forum for help but didn't find a satisfactory pointer. (I could have used an "incorrect" search term -- "PDF reader"...  ???  )

The support in this forum along with other PCLOS forums is great. Oh helpful wizards, what am I looking for to read PDFs in Phoenix?

Many thanks in advance,
Far North,
Canada, eh!

In every DE I have installed  I use Fox It Reader, even in windows is good.

Give it a try  :)

I like Evince and it seems to work well with xfce.

A HUGE +1 for Evince.

Foxit is ok, too.

An equally HUGE -1 for Adobe Reader. Too much baggage, IMHO. (Sorry, T6).

the acrobat reader option was a joke but is important to mention that it is a viable option on pclinux, linux in general

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Phoenix comes with Evince already installed.

BTW, Old North, I too used to have PCLOS 2007 on my last computer, which I still have as a spare.  But I got turned off by KDE4 when it came out, went with GNOME for a while, but last spring, moved to Xfce, even though I'm now on a computer with twice as much RAM as my old one.

Today, after almost two years of work, we have the special pleasure of announcing the much awaited release of Xfce 4.8, the new stable version that supersedes Xfce 4.6.

Me too.  Though occasionally I would like something a bit more robust.  But it works pretty well.
