OB right click problem
« on: January 15, 2011, 02:10:52 AM »
I am building a system on OB bonsai in VBox, and all was going well until I noticed that if I right click on the desktop menu, menus need to be clicked open.  If right click on something to do an action, I have to also left click to activate.  The hover function has stopped working.  I also noticed that I can't drag windows on the desktop when opened.  I've compared the OB config files with my main system, and also uninstalled a glitchy conky - whether its misbehaviour was cause or effect isn't clear.  A conflict has popped up somewhere and I can't quite put my finger on it.

Hi,

I would like be of some help to you, but I don't quite understand what you explain. I could understand better with a step by step action explained, or by a screenshot? I understand one thing only, it's the window that will not let itself be dragged : have you tried to click on the middle sign at the upper right part of the window ?

One thing : although someone told me he was doing all his remasters in vbox with success, I have met with a few issues while trying to do so, some time ago. I don't consider it reliable enough for this use, and I don't use it for this purpose anymore, or just for a short period time for a test version that is to be soon replaced.

Hi melodie,

Step by step - example: I right click on the desktop for the main menu.  Normally just placing the curser over a menu item, say Applications, would activate that item and bring up the next level.  I wouldn't click to activate until I reach my target.  At the moment however, to open anything requires a left click.  If I left-click/drag the curser across text to copy, nothing highlights until I let go of the button.  If I right click on a document to open it with an app, I have to keep the right button down so I can click an action with the left button.  And when a window is opened, for eg. file manager, I can't move it around on the desktop.  If I expand that window then I can't make it smaller, either with the button or by dragging the corner.  I have replaced most of the config files with clean backups, but no change.

I am having a bad feeling about VBox.  There seem to be issues with Guest Additions - things just don't seem to work right.  I am only using it because my testbed 'puter died.

Hi,

It looks to me like a data corruption. Is your project complicated to make ? According to what you want to do, maybe could I offer you to make the remaster you are trying to get, if you are not in a hurry for it. If you think this might help you, send me a pm.

Hi melodie,

Thanks for the offer but the project isn't too big yet.  I did a remaster just the day before the glitch, so there is that backup.  I have replaced the config files, uninstalled and reinstalled OB, used a different WM, but the problem remains.  I've got a feeling I did something to the system, but who knows what.

However, on the plus side I cracked the VBox issue of shared folders between Linux host and Linux guest, and did my first successful ./configure-make-make install!  So it's not all bad.  I've just got this little glitch following me around.  Maybe I could come up with a new distro for all the odd-ball problems - GlitchLinux!  Now that's got a ring to it!!

I have had glitches following me quite a while too, and suddenly I found the right machine, the right place to do the remasters, and the glitches that were due to unknow causes disappeared. Only are let thoses induced by the little things I forget to clean out before remastering.(mainly)

Hi melodie,

I did a reinstall of the remaster but keeping /home.  Solved the problem.  I obviously borked the system somehow - some of the software I was playing with may have been an issue.  I am trying to do an Astronomy version - just for fun and as a learning project.  Some apps are java based, and others are a bit old and definitely not found in the repositories!!  However I have narrowed down the software list a bit, so that should keep this version out of trouble.  Fingers crossed!

Hi melodie,

Thanks for the extra fingers - and thumbs!!  All seems to have worked and I now have my beta astronomy remaster.  I'll upload it to a Dropbox thingy, but that will take quite a few hours.  Maybe I should start another thread on this?

Slight mistake, there should have been less fingers.

Unless I had also put the feet with it, which would not be very practical for walking.

/sure start a thread ! :)
