Temperature Monitoring
« on: January 13, 2011, 05:38:29 AM »
I am looking for a temperature monitoring and display device which can be slotted into a spare front panel bay on my desktop PC. If anyone is using something like this I would love to hear about your device.

Ideally it should have four temp probes for placement in various location of the PC, and display those four temps on the front panel.

Thanks.

EDIT
This one is in the price range I had in mind .....  three sensors, not four ......  I am not concerned with fans, only temperature

Mid priced unit ....  might do all I need ......

Another possibility ....  on the higher side of the price range .....  but has four sensors

Scythe tends to make decent equipment, but that's a significant jump in price from the others you mention.  Have you checked over at xoxide.com?  They have a ton of stuff that may suit you better...

Glad to be of some small service.  Hope you find something useful to you.  What causes you to want to monitor four different points, anyhow?  (Got four discrete CPU's or something? Or is it more like CPU0, CPU1, Chipset, Video?)

Anyhow, good hunting!

I am presently using a Dell PC .....  and in their 'wisdom' they refuse to allow anything to access the temp info from anywhere in the PC that is under their control.

So I thought to try to find something that would give me some info (cheaply ;D ) ..... temps on CPU, Case, another heatsink, memory and HDD area ......  with 4 monitors I would have a spare one to monitor different locations.
The air-flow arrangement in the Dell is quite good, but I am unsure how effective it really is.  :(

regards.

Um... which model Dell is that?  I have the System Monitor widget in my panel, and it allows me to monitor CPU and ACPI temperatures from the installed instruments in my laptop (a Latitude D620).  You might peer into the CMOS setup menus and see if there is something needing to be configured?  (Just a thought...)

Jot back with the model and let's see if we can't figure something out.

Oh, and I found some more temperature monitoring and control gear at TigerDirect.com.  One unit for about $29 had five temperature sensors and a touchscreen for controlling up to five fans.  Looked pretty neat.

Hey, that's what we're supposed to do.  Here's some more info for ya:

Dimension 9100 Service Manual

I don't see anything jumping out at me in the docs about temperature monitoring facilities in the BIOS, so you're probably gonna need some kind of drive-bay device to do what you want to do.

Be careful if you do install outboard temperature sensors to make sure they are securely affixed (so they give good readings and don't bounce around in the case possibly presenting an electrical hazard to your system and you).

That's because there are none that are user accessible.

A typical Dell situation.

Thanks for the link to the manual.   ;)
