Add apps to launcher?
« on: January 11, 2011, 06:58:32 PM »
I lost the thread where someone mentioned how to drag and drop applications to add to a launcher. I'm trying to remember how it's done. I'm trying to drag and drop apps from /usr/bin to the launcher but they are not going.  Am I in the wrong area?

Hi, Mark,

Did you have something like this in mind?

http://www.ipernity.com/blog/67098/241812
"Xfce: How to Add a Launcher to Your Panel (The Easy Way)." 9 Apr. 2010.

(The screenshots show the F****** Xfce Spin because I had it installed at the time rather than PCLOS Phoenix. I've since moved back to Phoenix).

I think this procedure should work for you. HTH,

You're very welcome.  :) If the Xfce distro I'm trying doesn't have a top panel by default, I add one and then I add launchers on that panel for my most frequently used applications (Claws Mail, OOo Writer and Calc, Gnucash, VLC, etc.). So I've had a fair amount of practice doing that ...

I need that top panel, too!:) All my Desktop Environments, KDE, LXDE, and now, XFCE, get a top panel.:)

I'm just trying to decide if I want to freely move the panel or lock down.  Also, trying to decide if autohide is something want.  I wish the top panel would be covered by other windows.

Sproggy,

Yes, thank you!  This and the instructions posted by kalwisti really help a great deal.

I'm stacking my launchers.  I create one laucnher and then populate them with similar apps. al the graphics apps go in one laucher, office apps in another.  They all appear in a drop down menu.

Nice to know that it works eith way.  I may edit mine and make them as single launcher and run the toolbar all the way across the screen seeing as how a browser or file manager window won't cover the panel.

I'm gong to play with this tonight while I work on my features.:)

Of course, you could also check out the June thru August 2010 issues of The PCLinuxOS Magazine, where this, along with a ton of other information about Xfce, was covered.  ;) :P

Or even better ... one can download the Special Edition of PCLOS Magazine which reissues the entire Xfce series in one place:

http://pclosmag.com/index.php/downloads
"Gtk Lightweight Desktops: Xfce & LXDE S.E."

I have a copy of this stored in my Documents folder for handy reference. (I probably should've mentioned this when I first replied to Mark, but I didn't think of it at the time).

parnote, thanks for your hard work on this series of articles as well as the ones on LXDE. They are a valuable resource! (Are you planning on some sort of update when Xfce 4.8 is released and makes it way to the PCLOS repos?)  :)

How correct you are, kalwisti! The Gtk Lightweight Desktops: Xfce & LXDE Special Edition will give you all of the Xfce articles (plus those for LXDE) all in one edition. Plus, I'm glad you have found it useful.

I hope to offer an update to the Xfce articles once Xfce 4.8 comes out. From talking with Sproggy, it sounds like there are a lot of improvements and enhancements.
