Add Trash To Your Desktop
« on: January 10, 2011, 01:59:18 AM »
Open leafpad, copy and paste the code below to it --
Code: [Select]
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Link
Icon=user-trash.png
Name=Trash
GenericName=Trash
Comment=Contains trash
Categories=FileManager;FileManager;X-MandrivaLinux-System-FileTools;
URL=trash:///
StartupNotify=true
Terminal=false
MimeType=x-directory/normal;inode/directory;
Encoding=UTF-8
X-Desktop-File-Install-Version=0.11

Save it to your Desktop as Trash.desktop.

The trash icon should be in /usr/share/icons/oxygen/32x32/places. You can move it to /usr/share/icons.

Thanks Neal.  Umm, sorry, this is surely a moronic question:  what do we do with the trash icon on our desktop?

I have no clue.

For that matter, I don't know how to move existing icons from the main menu onto the desktop, nor onto the rapid start border, just below the desktop.  I don't know the innards of LXDE, yet.

Perhaps there is a tutorial I should read?

I am more familiar, only slightly, with XFCE, where one simply right clicks the mouse anywhere on the desktop to observe a dropdown menu.  Seems quite convenient.  Then, my desktop contains zero icons, instead, only a photograph of a lovely orchid, or a winter snowscape from Norway, or a field of wheat in Saskatchewan, or a lovely frog from Indonesia.

So much to learn, so little time to do so.....

Trash contains files that were sent to it. You can open it from the desktop icon and either delete or restore those icons.

Easy. To add icons to your desktop, open the menu, right click the app you want to add and click on Add to desktop.

rapid start border? I suppose you mean the panel? Again, easy. Right click on the left side of the panel near the end and choose Application Launch Bar Settings. When it opens, you will see the list of icons on the launch bar in the left side of the panel. On the right side you will see a list of the sub-menus - each is expandable. Expand the  sub-menu of your choice, left click the app you want to add to the launch bar and click Add in the center section. To remove an entry, click it on the left side and click Remove in the center.

To rearrange the positions of your launch bar icons, click the entry for an icon you want to move (left side) and use the up or down button in the center.

Whether to use desktop icons or not is a personal choice. I prefer a clean desktop, but there are people who like desktop icons. I created the Trash desktop file after someone asked for it and then posted about it here.

That can be easily done on LXDE too:

The applications shown in the menu can easily be changed.

How do you change the applications in that "right-click" menu?

Thanks, Neal.

Does this icon change if the trash is empty or full (or is this asking too much ;) ) I won't have access to the computer with LXDE until tomorrow.

What is the app launcher / docky-bar thingy up the left side of your desktop?

Although I don't use eye candy (lots of stuff in my KDE install is turned off) , I am looking for a lightweight PCLOS distro to load onto lesser hdwr and need something that at least appears somewhat modern.

Thanks

wbar. Look for it in Synaptic. Very small and useful program.

@Aradalf, do you have a link to that wallpaper? Is it available in different sizes?
