I know this thread is old, but still relevant for me.

I have just encountered the 98% error message again. It still happens from time to time. What I have noticed is that it happens when I use a DVD-RW. I reformat it using K3B, which also gives an error message, but yet still works. The MD5SUM was correct before burning. From memory, the DVD always works after I see this error. However it does still leave that bit of discomfort and doubt in my mind. I suspect its to do with the media / burner (slight compatibility issue). It always seems to large ISO's (Linux/BSD distros), and I use DAO mode. I've never seen errors with cdrecord (wodim).

My observations have been that the "brand" of DVD you purchase plays a major roll in how things behave.  ;)

As I don't have to pay for the DVDs ( most of the time ) I have tried from the very cheap to all brand names available here.
So, my observation is that it doesn't make a difference.
In all fairness, I have to say, that when you buy brand names here, you still don't have a guarantee , as they are all << made in China >> , as we jokingly say every time we are 'done in'. ::)

as in my post above, I still compared the bits of a ? bad ? one ( K3b ) to a < good > one ( acetoneiso ), and the total bit count stayed the same.
So, I am not sure what's the real story

Just to be clear, I am not suggesting that one brand is better than any other.

I am simply saying that I have had "no luck" with one brand and then "total success" with some other brand.

Perhaps it is a DVD Burner/DVD Brand compatibility,, "Yen" thing.  ;) ;D ;D

That was understood. No problem there   ;D

Yeah, something like that. It's more difficult to investigate, as it involves asking other people " to lend me " their computer for a while ( just for starters ).
Not going to happen soon  ;D
