Program installed from synaptic and speed test
« on: January 09, 2011, 07:10:56 PM »
Hi, I was looking for something to disable the tap to click on my touchpad and that drives me crazy clicking on thing that I don't want to. I followed this thread which really may or may not do what I want, I also dislike the scroll feature so want to be able to disable that also. I marked the QSynaptic and applied now where do I find it? Sorry but a total noob here and searching didn't seem to get me too far.

Thanks

You're using KDE?

Check out touchpad toggle in the repository. This will disable the touchpad for the session, rebooting or restarting X will restore.  Of course, if you are using it as a mouse, this is not good. (I use a USB mouse on my laptop, so I'm OK)

Otherwise check out touchfreeze, also in the repository.  I may be what you want.
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

That's something that's been driving me nuts, too. I just did a repo search on touchpad and found something that is working great: touchfreeze. I couldn't find a menu entry for it, so I just launched it from Konsole.

I don't see QSynaptic in the repo, and in the note for synaptiks, it says that it is the replacement for QSynaptic. If that's what you're using in KDE, you can configure it in More Applications>Configuration>Configure Your Desktop.

Thanks for the replies but I don't use a mouse so I just want to be able to turn off tap to click and the scrolling. I did get touchfreeze but that doesn't do what I want. Hope someone can give me an idea. Now I have to figure out how to get rid of touchfreeze.

It's certainly a different animal from that other OS, I need to go buy a book or something.

Hi kbz1960,
Now I have to figure out how to get rid of touchfreeze.
You install & uninstall all programs from synaptic. Simple, huh?
btw, welcome to the forum.

Ok so synaptic is add/remove programs. Not so difficult and thanks for the welcome. I'm sure to be a big pain in the rear for awhile.

Yep.
BTW, if you haven't done it, you can run the Repository Speed test.
You should find it at start>software center>
it will check the speed of the software repositories to find the fastest one for you.
You can choose the fastest one & set it as default.
Can make a lot of difference.
See you.

Try gsynaptic from the repository. I think it has the functions you're looking for.

I ran it and it says it failed but runs thru the servers and when it finishes there are no choices and it says not to use the one it is using. I guess I'm doing something wrong? Does it needs to be run as admin?

In KDE:

press <Alt><F2> and start typing the name of the application you're looking for (it'll appear after a few characters)

or

open a Konsole, and try e.g. to type 3 characters, and then press <tab> (then you'll see all possibilities with that starting characters)

or

open the menu (I think you've done that already), and search in every menu  :P (I'd take a look in menu>>morePrograms>>configuration)

EDIT: we're not getting tired of your questions; we're happy you tried to look it up on the internet, and we're here to help you...  ;)
and DO NOT say 'stupid' questions - those don't exist!  8)
