firefox and big images
« on: January 08, 2011, 08:41:43 PM »
i use firefox for almost everything(sometimes have to use ie8  :(  ) but with the latest versions(after 3.2) the problem has become really impossible to handle

images bigger than 2000x2000(tried images of 8000+x6000+) pixels makes firefox go crazy, eat all the cpu and also uses lots of ram, basically looks like it crashed but no, it is so slow to respond that you have to close the image to recover the web browser and this sometimes can take up to 20 seconds

i was thinking that the problem could be my machine, too slow for such big images, especially when i load 5 or 6 of them but when i test opera, opera can handle them perfectly

i don't know what settings could be responsible of this weird behavior

i only have flashblock addon, videodownloadhelper and flashgot addons installed

Not bad if you point us to some of the pictures causing the problem. Will try to replicate. :-\

the most common source for big resolution images is wallpapers with nice girls

http://wallbase.net/search  will show lots of high res images, open 5 or more on another tabs

also from http://jenniferlovehewitt.celebscentral.net/user/picture/482361/Jennifer+Love+Hewitt

or http://oliviawilde.celebscentral.net/user/picture/691871/Olivia+Wilde

in general any source of multiple high quality images will cause the situation, just imagine how complicated to see the monthly screenshots is, it is not a particular page, it is images of a certain size

Opened from http://wallbase.net/search 7 tabs with 5616x3744 images (I thing St. Petersburg) and in max zoomed view. There are glitches only when I switch between those tabs (delay ~2 sec. for loading the image). htop reports 50 - 65 % CPU during the switch and the usual 5 - 12 % in the other time. The other apps opened together with FF were Chromium, Skype, Ktorrent, DC++ and Htop.

that delay, i can have 10 seconds or more between tab switch, especially when having more images on other tabs

scroll down image can take another 10 seconds

After images are loaded no any problem with the scroll down and even scroll up :D.
Switching to other opened progs also is w/o problem.

Ask more now before I close FF. :)

a dualcore using up to 60% to load images?

that explains why my semprom at 1600 mhz makes me wait

That's why I posted specs.

When images are very fat this always happens to me.

i was doing a search about the problem and in fedora there was a practically identical report but it was blamed the nvidia driver for the problem, supposedly the open source driver doesn't give this

i am using open source driver with my ati card

in another site is suggested to disable ipv6 in about:config but that is already done

another suggestion was network.http.pipelining set to false, will try this

T6, I didn't have any problems with 10 photos open. I'm using a AMD Phenom II 550 processor( Duel Core) with a Gforce GTS 250 OC.

uhg no, that last one just makes things worse!

almost couldn't load that Jenifer image  :(

your cpu is almost 4 times bigger than mine so that explains why there is no problem, firefox abuses it but since it is so big/powerful you don't see the problem happen, thanks for your report
