<Answer>Learning question on shell & pclos
« on: January 08, 2011, 01:18:01 PM »
I've been searching awhile. So any help on why I am not finding stuff would help. :'( LOL
Anyway, I am checking out tuts on line and was wondering??? What shells does pclos available??? I know bash. I am also reading about CLI. Curious about way you would go about listing(ls?) shells as a practice.cd /$shell then ls??  Also is any terminals better for beginner's than another???
Thanks

if you are in kde4 konsole uses bash

most distros will use bash only but there is alternatives

cli is console line interface and calls the app you want, in our case is bash

there is other options but i always used bash when i need it, and honestly i don't need it much, maybe to do something each week or two, most of what you do in console can be done graphically, especially on pclinux

console is on decline you know?  not for being not useful, just you have to learn some things and people prefers to use gui(graphical user interface) environments

keith221,

Have you checked out the Command Line Interface Intro Special Edition of The PCLinuxOS Magazine? It's a 12 part step-by-step tutorial of getting up and going with the Linux command line.

As a matter of fact that's what got me to ask the question. I've used cd, ls w/ -a -l and kind of explored.

Cool! Critter's series that makes up that special edition of the magazine is designed to take a user, step by step, from no knowledge of the command line, up through more advanced topics (like bash scripting), in an organized manner. While you can skip around within the series, you may get more out of it by utilizing it more as a lesson plan, and going through the articles in order.

While I am doing the lesson's, I am also finding my way around. I am trying to figure out where to put things. I got the free clipart from software center and got files and stuff. There must be somewhere to put file/dir's so I can use the clipart without having open every file and look inside. Thanks for your time. Learning curve on the file system!! I do whatever I want on that other OS, but sure am a little lost here. Of, course it's been 3 weeks now!!!
If it's OK to mention I also found some really good tuts on going from Windows to Linux on the IBM website.

Hi,

For file system:

http://tldp.org/LDP/Linux-Filesystem-Hierarchy/html/index.html

a bible for command lines:
http://ss64.com/bash/

next you might want to know how to read the man in console.

Start with "man ls" which is among the most simple, then try "man man".

What shells does pclos available??? I know bash.

In the repository you'll find the Bourne Again shell (a.k.a. bash), the C shell (as tcsh), the korn shell (ksh) -- and also dash, fish and sash. You don't have to use bash as your default shell, but why wouldn't you want to? You'd have to install it anyway if you want to run shell script written by anybody else.

i was reading about this and it seems that if you want to learn something better than bash, ksh is what you should learn, anyway, bash is basic, you need it but as i said, console is used less and less
