Virtual Box 4.0
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:49:40 PM »
I realize that ver. 4 is in the testing section of synaptic.  So it must be presenting problems, otherwise it would be available regularly.  I use my computer for work, so that is why I haven't yet upgraded via the testing section.

Can anyone let me know what the problems are?  When is it likely to be stable enough to include in an update?  Any information would be helpful.

I currently have ver. 4 on my Windows 7 x64 laptop and it seems to perform will.  Is this a linux only problem?

Thanks,
MCP

The reason why it is in testing section is here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,84623.0.html

As far as i know, there is nothing wrong with this release that we are aware of but some people dont want to update because the added features arent compelling enough and Vbox has a reputation of releasing buggy major releases and work out the bugs on future minor releases.

Just wondering, is there any feature in the new version worth updating to?

There seem to be a new version of vbox every couple of weeks and i always update but my use of the software hardly changes. To me, i risk stuff breaking when updating without getting any new features from the update since my basic needs were satisfied ages ago.

You can compare this version 4.0 against the one we use now, with KDE 4 introduced during KDE 3.5
It's just not the same thing.

I had a look at it and stepped in the waiting room  ;)

I've tried to install PCLinuxOS KDE 2010.12 and Gnome 2010.12 inside Virtualbox 4.  Both seem to install just fine, but when I reboot the VM, I go back to the Live Install versions.  Has anyone had a similar experience?

you are getting that behavior probably because the installation image is still attached to the virtual machine and the virtual machine is set to first boot from a cd, go the configuration page of the virtual machine and re arrange boot up order and make booting from a hard driver first or disconnect the installation image

I am ambivalent towards it. The previous versions are just as good and I am not really wowed by version 4.

Make sure the CD-ROM is not mounted, then reboot your VM.  That should fix it.

After installing the testing version of VBox 4 my machine kept freezing with USB 2.0 error...

I am back to VBox 3.x stable.
