usb wireless can't resolve addresses
« on: January 05, 2011, 11:13:56 AM »
My DSL modem was being used as bridge to my netgear router and all was fine. I reconfigured my Motorola 3347 modem/router to work as a router and eliminate one black box. It is set up PPPoE and seems to function correctly. I can browse with no problem but have no FTP, no email and synaptic can't connect due to failure to resolve. Running Wireshark I see standard DNS query and standard DNS response which returns the correct address for the inquiry; in this case pclosusers.com. But I get the can't reslove response in synaptic. The response seems to get lost in the mail.
I discovered that if I connect ethernet cable and use eth0 there is no problem. I really do not want to permanently run a cable across the room. I have the latest/greatest PCLOS installed. I am using Belkin usb wireless adaptor which I have used for well over a year with no problem. I have no firewalls at the current time.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Since the problem emerged when you switched to one box, have you investigated all the settings of that box? That is, via 192.168.0.1 (or whatever your box uses) in a browser?

Also, try pinging the box, then try pinging a web site on the other side of it, e.g. www.google.com, to see if you can get responses from both.

You could try setting the DNS lookups to Google's free DNS servers.

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Perhaps my posting was unclear. DNS is working fine. I have no problem web browsing. But if I try to use thunderbird, filezilla, pan or synaptic it ACTS as if there is no resolution to the DNS query. In fact there is, as I can plainly see it in wireshark. but it seems to not get back to the app. If DNS were not working I could not use chromium or firefox which, in fact, I can.
