[SOLVED] Reinstall Konqueror or Not?
« on: January 03, 2011, 01:18:37 PM »
I am using FF as my main browser, but on occasion I like to use the Konqueror browser and file manager.  But ever since I installed the latest version of PCLinuxOS, I have not been able to get the browser to work like it did on older versions.  I have played with the settings and have followed some advice from others, but I can't get the location to work.  In other words I can't type any address into the space.  Neither do I have a SEARCH area.

I know this is not much information to work with, but I feel so tangled up and do not want to give something that will just tangle more.

So I am asking if I can just reinstall the Konqueror stuff? If so I need (lots of) directions about that.

Or I need someone to work with me on getting it straightened out. Then I could give screen shots and extra info.

Thanks!

konqueror is not important anymore, for web browsing and for file browsing

dolphin or pcman file manager are better solutions under kde4

for web browsing if firefox gives problems opera 11 is a better solution

about konqueror bar, i can't help you, last time i used it it was working fine

Does the Location Toolbar show up. If not click on:
Settings > Toolbars Shown
check box next to Location Toolbar

The "new" Konqueror does not have a seperate search toolbar like KDE 3 had. You search with "Web Shortcuts". To search Google for PCLinuxOS:
In the Location Bar type:
gg:pclinuxos
Hit ENTER
and there you are

OK, I understand now that Konq does not have the Search.  When I couldn't search before I somehow did pull Google up and used the search from there.  Here shows that I do have the Location Bar up.

BUT and here is what I am having a hard time explaining.  Below is the picture of the location bar as I see it.
But I cannot type anything into it. The cursor goes there.....but cannot type.

Try adding something like this to ~/.kde4/share/config/konquerorrc:

Code: [Select]
[SearchBar]
CurrentEngine=google
History list=\\0
Mode=1
SuggestionEnabled=true

The search bar is still there. I don't know why you can't activate or deactivate it from the dropdown anymore. Probably an oversight.

(On the other hand, I never use it. The web shortcuts are so much more versatile.)

Install the package konq-plugins from Synaptic.

[root@fatman ~]# rpm -ql konq-plugins |grep search
/usr/lib/kde4/searchbarplugin.so
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/kpartplugins/searchbar.desktop
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/kpartplugins/searchbar.rc
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/opensearch
/usr/share/apps/konqueror/opensearch/google.xml

And a whole bunch of locale stuff follows. A whole bunch!

I went to Synaptic and search for konq-plugins and nothing showed.

Ah! I had the plugins installed, so that's probably why I hadn't lost the search bar. But I still cant activate or deactivate it from "Settings"-->"Toolbars Shown". I have to edit konquerorrc. (And I still prefer to use the web shortcuts.)

I would have agreed with this until the other day. I was working on a webpage with pictures. Did you know you can take a group of photos and put them in a folder by themself and open the folder with konqueror and go under Tools and select "Create Image Gallery..." and konqueror will quickly process those photos and create thumbnails in a folder and make an html page with the thumbnails clickable. You can click on the thumbnail and it will bring up the larger photo. There are some options for naming and rows also. The is not possible with dolphin.

For you that may be true.

Definitely not for me.

I prefer Konqueror.
