(SOLVED) Sound issues
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:02:59 PM »
Hi, installed PCLinuxOS for the first time in a long time.
No issues with anything other than that i cannot adjust the sound.
Quote
If i remember correctly the sound card is realtek rtl8139.
Control centre reports the following.
(ATI Technologies Inc|IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio Controller).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

I have a 5:1 speaker system connected via 3 jacks to the computer.
I have enabled pulse audio and 5.1 sound but all i can seem to find and enable in kmix is master, front, pcm, headphones, beep, capture and input source .
I have had to mute front as it is turned on it is full volume (very loud) and it has no slider volume control bar, neither does master.
Only the left and right speakers seem to work and they are very low.

I have tried alsaconfig but i cannot seem to find anyway of adjusting the sound for the front and left and right speaker.
No sound appears to be coming from the rear speakers or the subwoofer.

I am most likely missing the obvious but i have been struggling with this for a few hours now and have been unable to find a solution.

I have enabled pulse audio
Look in Application Launcher Menu-->Sound if you have "PulseAudio Volume Control" please. Check there Configuration too.

Just checked and i have no PulseAudio Volume control there???
Just re-checked Texstars setting from my above link and all configurations and and file/folders are exactly as they should be.

I have "PulseAudio Volume Control" here.

I am sorry for my two dumb questions but I'll better ask:
- Did you installed PulseAudio from Synaptic (and not only enabled it in PCC-->Hardware-->Sound Configuration)?
- Did you reboot after installing PA?

Thanks again, i now have everything installed that you have shown in your screenshot.
If i try and open PulseAudio Volume Control i get a message "connection failed: connection refused"
If i try and open PulseAudio Device Chooser i get a message "The Avahi Zeroconf service is not running. Please make sure that Avahi is installed and activated before starting the PulseAudio Device Chooser."
Avahi is installed and is running in services.

I am not now on the machine with PA.
Tonight I'll try running them in Terminal by pavucontrol and padevchooser to look at the output.

Just tried myself in a terminal and i get the same errors as above.
In a terminal as root i get the same error "connection failed: connection refused" for Pulse Audio Volume Control, but for Padevchooser i get
Quote
padevchooser
**
GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2270:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL)
Aborted

Still getting nowhere with being able to adjust the volume with my 5.1 sound.
Kmix only shows the front speaker and that has no volume slider and is very loud so i have to mute it.
Left and right speakers work but are very low and kmix has no controls at all for these.
Rear left and right speakers and subwoofer do not work and again no controls at all for these.

I am now able to start Pulse Audio Device Chooser after i updated Avahi from the testing repos, but i am still unable to start Pulse Audio Volume Control and i get the error Connection failed: Connection refused.

Tried a reinstall Of PclinuxOS.
Be great If anyone can offer anymore advice.

After getting frustrated i decided to try some other distro`s but all had some niggling problem so i decided to give pclinuxos a try for the third time.
The only difference this time was that i installed pulseaudio as per the instructions from Texstar before making any adjustments or updates to the system and hey presto the sound now works and i can adjust the volume.
I still do not have 5:1 but i do have front left and right speakers and the sub woofer is also working so i can live with that.

Thanks to unclev for your assistance.
Now its time to enjoy PCLinuxOS :)
