New pclinuxos enlightenment gtk isos
« on: January 02, 2011, 03:37:33 AM »
I've started working on a new base iso for the enlightenment gtk isos. Starting from openbox bonsai i'll make a barebone e17 iso with all needed firmware, drivers etc... then i'll build 2 (maybe 3) new e17+gtk isos.
First a full gtk edition and light gtk edition. Then maybe an ultra light (geeky) edition with mostly cli and ultra light apps.

I'll provide a newbie friendly user interface and a couple of additional e17 profiles to switch to (itask-ng setup, geeky setup with tiling, etc...)
The full and light gtk versions must meet what pclinuxos is all about: Radical simplicity!
When there's interest

I'll be posting a first barebone iso pretty soon and i'll need your help testing and improving the usability, setup and package selections for the gtk full and light versions.

We also need to consider the artwork, should we stick to the blackwood theme, use the default pclinuxos theming with the e17-theme A-Pclinuxos or are we going to redo a full set of artwork (gfxboot, plymouth, gdm, e17 + gtk + icons). Mostly looking to Agust and loukingjr and other graphical artists for this. If you guys want completely new artwork i'll give 'carte blance' to the artists to make it their own. :)

I'll be back with a first base iso to try out  Please ventilate your wishes and thoughts in this topic.
Concerning package selections for the isos i'll make other topics for that once the base iso is tested and ready to use. :)

We have the matching gdm theme eGDM-pclos in synaptic so just need to request packages for gtk and icons.
I'd also need the same wallpaper in .edj with password info like we did on the previous iso and i'd like to have a matching 800x600 jpg for grub bootsplash.

Why do you doubyt bonsai as base, it's very minimal but my base iso will be much heavier cause i'll add all proprietary drivers and firmware. Anyway i'll take plenty of time for testing so i can restart from another base if necessary.

Hi Agust,

I build the Bonsai edition along with all the people who helped test and debug it especially for projects such as this one. It has a special feature that helps in this way : all the history in Synaptic has been kept since the very beginning, that's to say when it had a gui first (I build it on pure cli.iso).

The other thing is I can help smurflover by telling him what files he can get rid of, when he will have added the components needed for E17. I would like to write a few tutorials about the tips and tricks that the Bonsai version provides.

For some technical reasons, I'll first redo blogs at a new host, and then have multiblog enabled, an publish in 2 languages. Such as here:
http://melodie.tyruiop.org/blog/en/

(click on the "French" button on the right sidebar).

Agust, if you have not tried the Openbox Bonsai version, maybe would you want to do so sometime. :)

Smurflover, go ahead ! I'll support your project. (About recreating a cli.iso : you may want to wait that we change package manager and see if etjr wants to make a new cli.iso with the new next package manager. He is very good at making cli.iso, he has been doing it for years and knows what are the missing packages to install locally to succeed... )

Happy New Year to all !

I really like the bonsai as a starting point, i'll add all drivers that are needed for an real pclinuxos livecd (comparing package lists atm), remove openbox and add e17. Easy going as e17 provides everything it needs itself without having to install extra dependencies. Doesn't even need gtk or qt.  Then change the artwork and provide 3 or 4 different e17 profiles (experimenting with a setup with tiling windowmanagement :) ).
That will pretty much be the base i'll be starting off for the other isos after having it tested on different hardware.

Still a lot to do though, it'll be ready when it's ready :)

I really like the bonsai as a starting point, i'll add all drivers that are needed for an real pclinuxos livecd (comparing package lists atm), remove openbox and add e17.

What comes along with Openbox, in that version, that you can remove:
* openbox-menu
* feh (I think I installed it, I let you check)
* lxpanel
* a program for lxpanel in /usr/local/bin : shutdown-dialog.py (just remove the file, we don't have a package for it)

and of course you will have to remove openbox-theme and obconf.

Will you keep PCManFM ?

In the home of guest, root, and in /etc/skel : you will have to remove .config/openbox directory.

I think that it is about it. I suppose you want to keep the compcache configuration that allows gaining on memory ?

As soon as you will have the first one ready, I'll stumble upon it nightly to try it out ! :D

PS: in Bonsai there is also Sakura as console... you see if you keep it or use another console.

PS: Edu RC2 is build on it, and contains all drivers, firmwares, and Flashplugin... it still has all the history, and what was added on top is the educational programs for children. What I didn't add yet, are some of the old firmwares, thoses having "2007" in the name... not knowing yet if I should or if I should not.

Removed almost all graphical stuff already. E17 provides everything. I'll only include lxterminal and lxtask but will even replace those for the full gtk version which will use lots of gnome apps. Hardware requirements will be lots higher for that one.

pcmanfm is also removed i'll use thunar for the light and nautilus for the full as i want to have the trashcan for the newbies.
The ultralight edition will use efm to keep it as light as possible.

Cleaning up configs will be for this evening but i know where to find them.
I'll keep compcache in place for now have to read up on it first.

What about /usr/local/bin/xcompmgr ? Don't think i need that is it from a package?

I'd prefer Wow-Elementary the dark version makes the gtk apps' toolbar too dark.
+ Elementary icons maybe?

What about /usr/local/bin/xcompmgr ? Don't think i need that is it from a package?

PCManFM does have a trashcan, since version 0.9.8 and we have 0.9.9, but it would have to be updated from git repo, because the very latest fix a bug that makes PCManFM crash when you restore a file from the Trash can (unless you copy/paste or cut/paste it from there).

You can remove /usr/local/bin/xcompmgr. It is the version improved by Dana, and does not belong to a package. The desktop effects it provides are intended for Openbox.

For Compcache : if you want to keep compcache, don't remove the /usr/local/sbin/rzscontrol file. :)
I wish someone would make a package for PCLinuxOS... do you think it would be time now to go do a new request for it ? Maybe some people having tested it in Openbox Bonsai would testify that it works well, and is valuable...

We can even have some spec files for it from other rpm distros.

Got 2 example screenshots to show what can be done with the profiles.
Profiles remember everything, theme, config, shelves & gadgets and their settings, loaded modules etc...
Never used them before but seems to be working very well.

We'll see when i release a first testing iso how people like it and how we can make it better. :)
Thanks for the backgrounds in advance, in 2011 pclinuxos must be THE place to be for e17!
