New eeePC 1015PEM-PU17-BU
« on: December 31, 2010, 12:23:15 AM »
Just ordered a new Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BU(Right here!) for basic computing needs. It has quite good battery life(13 hours!), and actually has a dual-core processor! It's a little more expensive than standard netbooks(around $370), but also has the computing power to support it. I'm planning on getting some additional ram(2 GB) for this little sucker, but currently deciding what exactly to get, as reviews state that this netbook is very finicky with some memory. The screen's a 10.1 inch, but the resolutions a little low(1024x600). It comes with Windoze 7 Starter, so planning on adding PCLinuxOS. One question I have is will PCLOS work well on this hardware? I know I should have asked before ordering, but it only came to my mind just now. I know many users of this forum currently use eeePCs to run PCLOS, and I also know Asus used to sell some eeePCs with Linux pre-installed(do they still do this???), but I still thought it would be safe to ask.  ;D ;D ;D

Also, what do you guys think. How is the netbook? Is it underpowered for the price? There's a eeePC 1025N(over here) for $100 more, half the battery life, NVidia ION and Optimus(instead of an Intel GMA), and a 1.8 GHz processor instead of the 1.5 GHz processor this one has. Should I have gotten that one instead?

I am happily running PCLOS e17 (light) on 512MB RAM, 4GB SSD, 7" screen. This netbook cost me $400 3 years ago.

You should be laughing with PCLOS KDE Full Monty. But why keep Windows?

You should be laughing with PCLOS KDE Full Monty.

What I meant to ask was not really if this was powerful enough to run PCLOS-since I know that PCLOS can work perfectly well on even 512mb of RAM-but if the specific hardware is supported. I know that 99% of modern hardware is supported, but I would still like to know if this is part of the other 1% ;).

In addition, I actually prefer LXDE, even on faster machines that can run KDE extremely well. Though, admittedly, I haven't tried e17 yet, so I might put that on this netbook.

But why keep Windows?

Well. my philosophy is why dispose of something I paid for, even if it's something that is used about once every other month.

my toshiba nb255 with atom n455 and intel gma3150 with 1 gb of ram works perfectly fine with kde4 and compiz

nothing to report, all ok except hat i can't control brightness of the screen

i hope that model comes with a cooperative wifi adapter, some models have weird wifi adapters

about the battery time, to last 13 hours this model must come with 9+ batteries and if i had to carry all that weight i would be pissed with myself for buying it because mine is 2 pounds and i consider it heavy, this one is 3+ and the charger should be heavy too, i consider the charger because because it carry netbook and charger alot all days

those 13 hours of battery should be 10 or less in reality especially with this dual core atom using wifi

Well, Amazon says it weighs only 2.76 pounds, and Asus says it weighs 1.27 kg, which is approx. 2.8 pounds, so it's not that heavy.

I agree, the battery life is probably actually only going to be about 10 hours. In fact, I think it might only be about 8 hours.

a friend has a older model, supposedly the battery lasts for 1 or 11 hours, older model, the user reports 9:30 maximum

this is why i say 10, very good time for a dual core netbook

the weight, i still think it is heavy, but that is not a valid argument to not to buy it

I see those all the time for $299 but with single core Atom 1.66 ghz processors, 160gb HD, and a variety of batteries.
Some are Asus, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Samsung even.  Nice to stay with Asus however.

The external DVD writers  I can find all need at least 1.5 ghz processors but the dual core should cover it, I hope.
If I ever replace my EeePC 900 900mhz I'm going at least 2.0 ghz even if  it's an Atom, just to cover the DVD writer.
Good old netbooks.  Internet started to be very good at 500mhz.

I think they discontinued their LINUX line.

I recently built my dughter a asus eepc for christmas
daul core atom forget all thhe specs ( but a newer one, anyways )
PcLinuxOS 2010 runs very well along side windows 7 Ultimate
which she needed for school work...
As far as I can tell everythings works perfectly
In windows as well as Pclinuxos, which she prefers to use now.
The Linux end utilizes the dual core very well , and I believe
she'll be using it for years to come.

IMHO, I think this is a very good netbook. I'm using EeePC 900 [4+16GB SSD/2GB ram] and it didn't let me down. Did try KDE/LXDE/Gnome Zen Mini, but I settled down with e17. All what I can say is, go for it  :D ;D ;)
