Strange PPoE connection....please help me !
« on: December 29, 2010, 07:53:53 PM »
Hello !

I installed PCLINUXOS LXDE yesterday and everything worked pretty good until i try to connect my pc to internet.
Before to install, i tried the distribution from Live USB (made by Unetbootin). Since the computer was able to connect, i didn't notice there were a problem.

After the installation, i retried to connect and it worked but....3 minutes. My connection is PPPoE.
Each time i manage to connect, it works several seconds to 2-3 min, after the connection crashes and i have to retry. I took a look at the Network Monitor, and it's really crazy, there is ethernet, ppp0, ppp1, ppp2 and it's constantly changing (except ethernet) ! When i did manage to connect, most of the time ppp0 disappeared and became ppp4 !

Please help me or else i will have to reinstall Windows XP non official (because my computer has SP1 and when i contact windows they say they can't give me a CD to make it work with my TRUE and PAID windows XP serial...). I need to work on the internet today.

Thank you very much !

As you can see, i'm not english native speaker. Sorry for my mistakes, hope you don't have headache to read....

P.S : I'm not in the right forum category, instead of "netbook" i saw "network"...i'm tired....

Hello Copeland,
Welcome to the forum...    Tell us what sort of PPPoE service you are using?  PPPoE over ethernet?, dialup?, ADSL on demand?
What hardware do you use and what is required to connect to your internet service?

Thank you to answer so quickly !

I use PPPoE over Ethernet, my ethernet card is a VIA Rhine II

I don't know what you mean by "what is required to connect", i just use a login and a password, on windows it's OK.

I don't think it's hardware problem. I tried on the same computer Damn Small Linux a couple of days before and it worked very well.

Anyone ?

Is there any script to type so i could configurate the PPPoE through the console ?
Or should i modify a configuration file ?

Thank you all, i really need to solve the problem now.

It might be worth having a look in /var/log/syslog which is where PPP logs messages.

I try to connect twice today : once using the graphical network center, once typing pppoeconf. All failed...

My ethernet is ON, it's ok, but when i add ppp0 ethernet go down and ppp0 seems to be activated. Problem is i need both of them ! No PPPoE without Ethernet, right ?

I hope you can help me !

Please....there's really nothing to do ? I need to connect on my PCLINUX PC today.

Is there any way to make a simple configuration, just like i did through Damn Small Linux ?

Maybe some people here now how to configurate a PPPoE connection, even manually.
No one have any clue about the reason why the connection stop suddenly ?

Last time i downloaded a synaptic package until 40%, after it crashed. It seems it's a configuration problem, or else i wouldn't be able to download even 1%. Right ?

Say anything, even though you think it's probably not the right answer.

Thank you all, i count on you.

Did you configure it through PCC?
If so what parameters did you specify (interface, start on boot, MTU size)?

I would look in /etc/ppp/options and uncomment the debug option.
Restart the system
Open a terminal, su to root and have it run:  tail -f /var/log/syslog  so you see what is happening
If PPP is not trying to start on boot then try starting it by clicking connect in network manager

Sorry, I don't know how DSL does it.

There are 2 ways to configure pppoe: user mode and kernel mode
I use kernel mode because it's more efficient (I don't know what DSL or PCC set up)
It needs a provider file in /etc/ppp/peers
The parameters depend on your provider but here's an example:

Code: [Select]
user XXXXXXXX                          <---- Put user-id for your provider here
plugin rp-pppoe.so eth2            <-----Specify ethernet internet to use
noipdefault
defaultroute
usepeerdns
debug
novj
noccp
nopcomp
noaccomp
unit 0
lcp-echo-interval 1
lcp-echo-failure 10
#connect /bin/true
noauth
persist
maxfail 0
mtu 1492
default-asyncmap

(User mode uses /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf and has a completely different format)
Then it needs either a pap-secrets or a chap-secrets file in /etc/ppp (depending on what your ISP uses) with the user-id and password.  The format required is given in the comments in the files.

Then you just run: pon <name of provider file> to start it.
Watch the output to syslog to see if any of your parameters are rejected by the ISP and adjust accordingly.

You could set it up in Damn Small Linux and see what it creates for these files (compare /etc/ppp/options as well but options specified in the provider file override those).

Thank you all for your help !

I tried something different today and it suddenly worked.
First i tried the command TerryN told me to try :

tail -f /var/log/syslog

After i checked the control center and i saw i had two connections : Ethernet and ppp0. I deleted the Ethernet to try and i disconnect then reconnect ppp0...and suddenly it worked !

I don't know which one made it work, could you explain me ?

The main problem now is that when i reboot i have to do the same thing again...Is there any way to make the computer remember the internet parameters ?

I'm in China now for my studies so i installed the Chinese localization for KDE, there are some strange things displayed now, so sorry for the strange fonts....i still need to parameter the interface and some applications, but it's much better than before.

Thank you again, i hope now i will be able now to solve the little problems i mentioned above with you help.

Glad you got it to work!

I think deleting the ethernet connection fixed it.  PPPoE handles the Ethernet itself so configuring the Ethernet separately probably caused a conflict.

It should remember the configuration after reboot.

Congratulations and enjoy!
