New Machine, Fresh Install NO SOUND [SOLVED]
« on: December 30, 2010, 07:53:05 AM »
I have tried many topics from this forum to help my issue, but so far nothing has worked.  I just built my new machine and have dual boot option with PCLinuxOS and WindowsXP.  All hardware installed and works under windows.  I think what the issue is the following:

Code: [Select]
[unclepaulie@localhost ~]$ lspcidrake -v | fgrep -i AUDIO
snd_hda_intel   : nVidia Corporation|High Definition Audio Controller (vendor:10de device:0be2 subv:196e subd:0699) (rev: a1)
snd_hda_intel   : Intel Corporation|N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (vendor:8086 device:27d8 subv:1458 subd:a002) (rev: 01)
[unclepaulie@localhost ~]$ grep sound-slot /etc/modprobe.conf
alias sound-slot-1 snd_hda_intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd_hda_intel
[unclepaulie@localhost ~]$

It thinks I have two sound cards.  I have a integrated sound card on my mb (Realtek ALC88B) and installed a NVIDIA GT 220 video card.  How to I edit the config file to either ignore the video card and select my integrated sound card as the default.  I am sort of a newbie... I used some unix a long time ago in college... looking for your help.

hello and welcome to the forum!

you have two sound cards

the video card probably has a hdmi output with a internal bridge to the soundcard, making it a second sound card

sometimes you need to install right driver for video card to handle this, you need nvidia 256 or more recent, in synaptic you can find it

if this is not enough there is other extra steps that can be done

this post has more info

Well, I had two sound devices. I wanted to use the on board sound card, since I don't have an HDMI input on my desktop speakers.

So, I downloaded the NVIDIA GT220 drivers from NVIDIA and the Realtek drivers from Realtek, complied them, installed them.  Then ran alsaconf (as root) to select the card I wanted to be used, it wrote the modprobe.conf file for the Realtek on board card.  I then ran the sound configuration under PCC and made sure both new drivers were installed.  Restart, and then beautiful sound!!!!  Thanks!

well, i never suggested to download and install anything outside the repos but if it worked for you, that is good

if you change kernel, you will need to install the video driver again

T6,

I check synaptic for the nvidia drivers as you stated, but did not see the one specific to my card.  I also, with the help of Nixer (post http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69408.0.html), we began troubleshooting my problem because we had the same video card, but when he found out I had no HDMI input, I had to change tracks.  I am new to Linux, as I got so tired of windows, I did not mean to do anything wrong, I just troubled shooted like I was in a windows environment and, by chance, I guess it worked this time.  Since my sound was my only issue to get PCLinux working 100%, I will always stick to our repos for any installations.  Thanks!

Jaydot,

I have read this post and will follow it to keep PCLinux stable... as I told T6 above, I was thinking like windows and I need to keep thinking Linux...  Thanks!

"I check synaptic for the nvidia drivers as you stated, but did not see the one specific to my card"

i believe that in synaptic you should be able to find nvidia 2.56 driver if not the 2.60

don't forget the driver reinstall if you change kernel

"I am new to Linux, as I got so tired of windows"

you are doing it very well  :)  i wish i could abandon windows but i work fixing windows pcs, for me abandon windows is the same as defeat so i have dualboot n my two machines, patience and learning is constant in windows

"I did not mean to do anything wrong"

you didn't, it is a long discussion between some users if drivers form repo or drivers form nvidia are better, both are the same but the way one is installed compared to the other result in differences that sometimes you don't want

as i mentioned before, it is more simple to use synaptic for the video card driver but is not strictly wrong, it is better for you to try synaptic first and if it doesn't work you can try then nvidia website drivers

using repos only you can have a viable installation working always very well for 2 or 3 years, maybe more, usually what force us to reinstall pclinux is mainbord or hard disk changes and even in that situation you sometimes won't need to reinstall
