switching from one PCLinuxOS Desktop installation to another
« on: December 29, 2010, 06:25:22 AM »
PCLinuxOS is distributed with different Desktop editions. I've installed one and thinking about switching to another one. Obviously complete re-installation seems to be an overkill. Probably the switch can be done by changing repositories and doing update. I guess it should be even possible to have more than 1 Desktop installed (ie. Gnome Desktop and XFCE Desktop) and different users could use different one.

So, I'm searching for information on how to do it. Appreciate any advices.

Hi v_andal - the same repos service all versions of PCLinuxOS

And yup, you can install other desktops.  Open Synaptic and select the Custom icon (at the bottom) and you'll see things like

task-lxde (for installing lxde )

task-xfce  (for installing xfce )

etc etc

Now when you login you can choose which DE to use
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Someone else jump in here if this is not the general happening.   I have had different DE's and I also have auto login enabled.   The machine will come up in the DE last used. So if you have auto login enabled you may have to log out, and then choose session type to get to another DE.
If it ain't broke, DON'T fix it!  If ya cain't fix it, ya gotta stand it.  If ya cain't stand it..............Visit the forum and search.

Hi wayne1932,

just to reassure you, that's the correct way with autologin.
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Perfect. Thank you!

I'm surprised though, that the task-lxde package is not marked as installed, even though originally I've installed this Desktop.

Those packages task-<DE> are meant for additional install along with the originally installed DE. So you don't want to have installed LXDE together with LXDE huh? ;)
