Hi rsd220,

although I've found the net_applet to be reliable for wifi management, the signal strength shown remains at a low rate it picked up shortly after initialization.

I've also found that a tool such as Conky, which updates the current network status much more frequently, gives me a better feel for the current state of the network, including signal strength.

I'm sure the experts here will be able to confirm this and also give you hints at which tools can aid you much more.

If you find that browsing or other network activity does seem sluggish, then there's more reason for concern, but otherwise I'd just take a look at the upload/download rates. Simply right-click the applet and select what should be monitor network interface (not really sure about the correct wording since I'm using a German version).

Hope this helps a little - and happy holidays  :D

Is the weak signal as reported accompanied by poor network performance(low transfer speeds and/or frequent disconnects)?

The signal strength is not that relevant once its above a certain point.

Can you try be a bit more descriptive of problems you are seeing as a result of reported signal strength.

What kernel are you running? The latest one in the repository is 2.6.33.7.pclos6. Install this kernel and see if it will improve things.

If the signal strength is too low the error rate rises, ultimately to "all error".  Once your signal is significantly better than that you can expect "normal service.  In my opinion your measurements are probably distorted by "different instruments" - ie different apps doing the measuring.
To get a REAL result, download the same file with both systems, and see what differs - use a medium sized file - say 100m, that should give you what you want.

"where are the experts ?"

we are the experts, if you expected something else on this forum, sorry, this is all there is

about the 10%  i have seen windows giving reports of higher values than in reality, also had problems connecting and dropping connection being 1 yard away from the router, supposedly 100% of signal

with that 10% you mention can you connect to internet/networks? at what distance from the router are you located?

if you can connect and the wireless signal has a password i could say that the 10% value is wrong so it doesn't matter

i had other routers that won't let me connect if the strength of the signal is lower than 50% using wpa security

the connection in linux too weak and intermittent

Quote
what distance from the router are you located?

about 7 meter

the wireless signal has a password

yes but i don't which type of security

the reason of weak signal is the driver in kernel must be change or development .so i searched and found this website http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download contains new driver
