Was I Just Lucky?
« on: December 21, 2010, 06:39:38 PM »
Hi, I've been here reading up on the problems people have installing PCLinuxOS and wondering if maybe I happened to be blessed with an easy install?

I'm very new to this OS and also new to installing anything whatsoever on this little netbook, but all I did was purchase a USB stick and format it to FAT32.  I then downloaded the ISO to the USB stick and also downloaded Unetbootin (on my Windows desktop computer) which actually did what I needed it to do <---- this seems very simple considering some of the instructions I've read?

Seemed very straight forward after that, just plugged the USB into the netbook, changed the BIOS to boot from "removable media" and it installed, no probems whatsoever,

It just worked, thats all I can say..... ;D :)

You not lucky. That is the case with the majority of people. With so many different hardware configurations and people with various levels of intelligence many things can happen between the keyboard and the chair. A support forum is a place to help resolve those issues. There are always going to be problems when one tries to interface software with hardware no matter what operating system you use.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Thanks Tex, I just feel really fortunate, didn't have to depend on anyone for help but a few pals a the eeeuser site, and got Lucky ;D

I guess feeling like you've done something right for a change in your life is a shock to the system for some of us (me)..... ::)

No need for sorry. We understand.  ;D

Most of us really do have problems few, and far between. It's because we want others to have the same experience, that we spend so much time here, helping others.

One of the biggest problems encountered with any Linux OS is new hardware support; not because of any deficiency in Linux, but lack of proper drivers from the hardware manufacturers. Windows always gets up to date drivers as the hardware comes to market. Linux gets drivers when the manufacturers get around to it. A lot of Linux drivers are open source because of this, reverse engineered by the various Linux developers. This does take time, and would be much easier if the manufacturers would just give the developers the proper specs for their hardware. That not being the case, in most instances, we usually recommend people buy hardware already known to have proper manufacturer support, and most of us do that ourselves. Hardware problems are most apparent where the user has already purchased the hardware, complete with a Windows installation, then decides to try Linux, and finds that the hardware is not yet supported in Linux; it's just too new.

Overall, Linux supports more hardware, out of the box, than any other OS, and supports it for a much longer period of time. That's why you will see so many threads with people trying to get the newest Linux versions running on the oldest hardware they can dig up, and most of the time actually doing so. It's a fun game for some of us.  ;D

I must be one of the blessed also as I never see any of the problems reported by others. I have old boxes, new boxes and everything in between.   :-*

I usually install without problems too, BUT then I start to fix what is not broken and....  :-[    or a hardware problem strikes (two computers at home testify what power surges can do to a MoBo) and you realize that is not the software until days later.

I have used PCLOS in my work Laptop for three and a half years now and has been rock solid, I don't think is luck but a well, carefully designed distro.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

No problems here, except those of my own making. I like to poke and prod too much. ;D Once I had a minor problem, but that turned out to be..... you guessed it.... a consequence of something I had done. ;) ;D

Funny thread. Welcome to the forums sandyv.

I wanted to point out that, as a recovering win98 user, and after who-knows-how-many years of using PCLinuxOS, I still expect problems when I try out some new wingding added to the distro. Time after time it all works just fine.

But every so often I think I have found a big problem and I report it. Nearly every time Tex has proved to me that the problem is indeed between the keyboard and the chair and I scuttle off with my tail between my legs!   :-[

Hi sandyv,

experienced the same as you, just that it was on a Thinkpad X61 Tablet. No CD drive, so I worked it out with UNetbootin and the whole installation took me less than 30 minutes. After that, I had a fully working system with all the codecs and everything. Only opened Synaptic, clicked "Reload", "Mark all upgrades", "Apply" and I was fully updated. After that only added a bunch of things from Synaptic and had all I wanted.

It's so easy with PCLinuxOS, it can make you ask yourself: "Now, what am I gonna do with that remaining half day I had planned for the installation?"  :D :D :D Many end up having fun in the sandbox  ;D
All that is is good. PCLinuxOS is.

Hi sandyv,
See you are settling in  ;D

Have a read through some of the help threads to see what the problems were and how they were resolved.
That should give you a good 'feel' for what causes most of the problems ......  usually our own actions  ;D

Thanks to you all.  Yes as all of you have said above, I too, get a sort of weird thrill out of fiddling with things (sometimes till I break em) it is sort of a enjoyable puzzle to put things together, and when things go too smoothly you really tend to wonder why? ?

I was really sure this old little pc woud not work as it had been sitting in someone's closet for over 4 years.  There are alot of little qlitches I need to understand (settings) and so forth, so I will likely be asking alot of questions in the near future! ;D
