Associate mms to VLC with firefox ¿?
« on: December 21, 2010, 05:32:50 AM »
I try to play a mms stream and I get this message:

Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (mms) isn't associated with any program.

How can I make VLC automatically launch when clicking on the stream?

Thx

- Open Firefox, type about:config in the address window, and click enter
- Right click on the window and choose New, then String from the pop-up menu that appears
- In the first pop-up box, enter: network.protocol-handler.app.mms
- In the next pop-up box enter the path to Vlc (e.g. /usr/bin/vlc)
- Now, click in the main window again but choose New Boolean
- In the first pop-up box, enter: network.protocol-handler.external.mms
- In the second pop-up select True

Thank you, but it seems it doesn't open this particular file.It says it is .asf.
Any suggestions on howto open it on vlc?

You may want to give Radio Tray a try. It's in the repos. I play several mms streams using Radio Tray. Just be sure to a) install the gstreamer-mms plugin, and b) be sure that you have win32codecs installed, since .asf is a Windows Media stream. You **may** have to install the gstreamer-rtms (I think I have that right) plugin, as well.
