Wireless home network <<<<Solved>>>
« on: December 23, 2010, 01:13:17 PM »
I have tried searching the fourm and haven not had much luck, perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.  Sorry I suck at navigating these forums and please excuse my noobiness.

Here is the deal. I installed PCLinuxOS in the Desktop ( Old Compaq Pissarro) . Everything is up and running fine. I have wireless internet working , local HP printer installed. I am trying to create a wireless home network with my Vista Laptop. I have working through a few tutorials for CUPS and SAMBA to share my local printer on the Linux box with the Vista Laptop With no luck.  PCLOS can see my Vista system over the network but cannot connect however Vista cannot even see PCLOS.

There is a program on your menu called "terminal" or "konsole", click to start it and then type this command and press enter and then just press enter again when asked for a password and copy and paste its contents here.

smbtree.

You need to have a package called "samba-server" installed and running for your vista machine to see your pclinuxos box.

Open synaptic(it has a reddish icon on your panel),enter root's password when asked and then click "reload" button when the program is up and running, then clicking "mark all upgrades" and finally click "apply" and "apply" again on  a pop window that will show.

The above procedure will fully update your system, always update your system first before installing packages.

Now that you have fully updates your system, search for "samba-server" and install the package. YOu will now need to start this program and configure it to expose folders on your linux box over the network.

Now go to pcc(pclinuxos control center, it has an icon on your panel too), then go to system->manage system services and make sure "smb" service is running, set the tick next to it to make it auto start at boot time.

Wait five minutes and check your vista system to see if it sees the linux box, it should, does it?

To add folders to share, go back to pcc main page and then click "network sharing" -> share drives and directories with windows machine and set up your shares there.

First just to make pclinuxos visible to your vista machine, we will start working on sharing files when you are done with this stage.

is that "\\US-PC" computer your vista computer? No error msg was reported and this suggested everything is working as expected. Do you have another windows machine on your network? Does it see these vista shares? Maybe you dont see anything. Anyway, lets solve one problem at a time and the problem at hand is seeing shares on linux on your vista machine.

One of your share name is "\\LOCALHOST\Externa WD", there is a space in the name and this could cause problems in the future and they could be difficult to diagnose. Can you change the name to something that doesnt have a space in the name?

Somebody else had difficulties in setting up samba shares off of folders in their home directory and it was determined that this does not work without crazy hacks, can you try to put your share someplace else? I would recommend at "/mnt" folder.

Try to create a test share there for now while we are trying to figure things out.

And like magic its working like a dream. Everything was set up correctly on the Linux box ( besides the naming convention of my external drive) I just forgot what i was doing in Vista.

While trying to map the network drives in Vista i was looking up the host name of my Linux box and not the IP address. Plugged in the IP and BAM!! there were my share folders and my printer.  Of course i have to give thanks to David Lechnyr and his web page http://www.oregontechsupport.com/samba/install.php .

I could use a hand changing the name of  "Externa WD"

Its like they say "if it aint broke, dont fix it"  :D .. just leave it that way if it work and we will come back to it if things break.

Everything is working as expected everywhere? If your original problem is solved, can you change the title of your thread and add "solved" it?

Thanks for checking us out and looking forward to seeing you around.

Well , managed to kill my network. My vista laptop caught a bug so i whiped it and installed PCLOS 2010.xx with Gnome.

For the life of me i can not get my laptop to access my shared folders. I have followed the steps layer out here http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,66668.0.html to no avail. I can see the mounted folder but none of the contents.
