Hello everybody.

After an update yesterday my PCLOS with KDE 4 ( installed on April 2010 and constantly updated since ), the system does not boot into the graphic Desktop anymore, or at least, I can see a black screen only. But I can hear the introductory sound of KDE. Instead a see a terminal-like info : "Looking for new hardware........". That's it.

Trying a startx from a terminal shows the following output :

 " # startx
xauth: creating new authorityfile /root/ .serverauth.4534

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0. If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.

Please consult the X.Org Foundation support at  http://pclinuxos.com for help.

Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyring giving up.

Xinit: Resource temporarily unavailable (errorno 11): unable to connect to X server

Xinit: No such process (errorno 3): server error.

The same result with a newly downloaded PCLOS 2010.12 KDE LiveCd. Only VESA works with a not acceptable Resolution.

The Nvidia video drivers are closed source drivers provided to the users of PCLinuxOS through a redistribution agreement with Nvidia Corporation. The latest drivers available from Nvidia are provided through our software repository. It appears to me that you have 3 options available at this time.

1. Upgrade your video card to one that works with the latest Nvidia drivers from Nvidia.

2. Post a bug report with Nvidia detailing the make, model and brand of your Video card in hopes a future driver update will be compatible with your video card.

3. Download and install an older working version of the driver from http://ftp.riken.go.jp/Linux/pclinuxos/apt/pclinuxos/2010/RPMS.nonfree/ Please remember there are two parts to this driver. The dkms-nvidia-current-xxxx package and the  x11-driver-video-nvidia-current-xxxx.

Good luck.
Tex

A good place to report and sometimes find solutions is at the Nvidia Linux Forum:

Hello everybody,

thanks to you all for your readiness to help me solve my problem.

The good news is, I fixed the problem yesterday with the help of a fellow German user from www.pclinuxosusers.de.

The solution was:

"apt-get remove --purge x11-driver-video-nvidia-current dkms-nvidia-current

apt-get install x11-driver-video-nvidia-current dkms-nvidia-current"

HURRAY !!!!

The strange thing is that I downloaded the freshly released PCLOS 2010.12 LiveCD and booting it always ends up with the same problem as with my installed system after Saturday's update.  :-[
Something special with my hardware ? I don't understand that.

But I understand that nvidia is closed source and this is not the right place for such problems.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help  ;)

The main culprit with the latest "x11-driver-video-nvidia-current 260.19.29-1" - package seems to be:

Enabling 3d-Desktop effects !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This definitely ends up with a malfunction of my graphics ( see my original posting ).

Running "drakx11" in a Terminal, reconfiguring my graphics with DISABLING compositing ( 3D-effects ), then restarting the system, and almost everything goes well again, except for, you guess, those 3D-effects.....

And, by the way, I also tested this with LinuxMint 10. Downloading and installing the proprietary-drivers resulted in exactly the same problem: No graphics after a reboot....

Even trying to start the latest PCLOS 201.12 livecd ends up this way. "No input signal" on STRG-CTRL-F8 and of course a Konsole on STRG-CTRL-F1 !!
Is COMPOSITING enabled by default ??? The only way to get started is with the VESA-drivers.

I wonder if this is just a problem with my GeForce 8400 GS or other Nvidia cards, too !?

Greetings and a really happy, succesful and healthy New Year to you all....

Lots of posts elsewhere too mentioning some issues with the 8400 and newer drivers...not for nothing, but I noticed Newegg had a whole lot of them on sale cheap, another red flag.
This aggression will not stand man.

It is a down dirty shame Nvidia makes graphic drivers that are not compatible with their video cards!  ??? ??? ???

but where?    where?     where did i heard that before?

with another name on it...  ati!  that was  ::)   :-X

honestly latest ati/amd seems better than nvidia, especially with this very old 8400 that should be perfectly supported, almost 2 years on sale
