<solved> link program to desktop item
« on: December 18, 2010, 07:21:45 PM »
In the process of trying to get my web cam (Microsoft vx6000) to work with Skype under the KDE4.5 desktop, I managed to lose the Skype icon from the Internet Applications list. By right clicking on my desktop I found that I should be able to create a link to an application...something to allow me to start Skype without using the run command. I can't figure out how to put the Skype icon back in the Internet Applications list. Either solution would be acceptable. I noticed that another user had also lost the Skype icon from his Application list but I could not see the solution to replacing it. I tried to completely uninstall Skype in the synaptic package manager and re-install but still no icon in the application list. Anyone have a solution? If not how about instructions to create a link on my desktop.?

You can easily recreate the menu entry: right-click the launcher icon on your panel (a.k.a the PC icon or the K-menu icon); click "Menu Editor"; navigate to "Internet" and click "New Item".

The default settings for skype look like this:

You don't have to tick "Place in system tray" as you have the option to "Start Skype minimised in the system tray" in Skype itself.

Because I'm using Cairo Dock and a web cam my own settings look like this:

Just click the box that in my picture shows an icon with a white "S" on a baby blue blob, and pick your icon. If your default icon set has a Skype icon you'll find it under "System icons:"-->"Applications". If it doesn't you have to tick "Other icons" and try to find it somewhere else.
