Update disaster - Synaptic frozen [Solved]
« on: December 14, 2010, 09:59:19 PM »
Hi,

I run Phoenix Mini and did an update this morning.  All appeared to be downloading correctly.

While installing this message appeared:

Code: [Select]
APT system reports:
rpmdb: unable to allocate memory for mutex; resize mutex region
rpmdb: Remove on temporary files invalid
error: cannot open Depends index using db3 - Cannot allocate memory (12)
rpmdb: unable to allocate memory for mutex; resize mutex region
error: cannot open Providename index using db3 - Cannot allocate memory (12)
rpmdb: unable to allocate memory for mutex; resize mutex region

Since then synaptic is frozen.  I do not dare to force close it or restart the PC ....

Any help most welcome.

I know I said it ...  ;D

What is plenty?  I have 5GB on root, 45GB on home.  Would that be enough?  I have run with a lot less in the past ...  ???

Am at work now and have to wait until tonight to try ....

What would be the course of the problem?

Canceling an update in the middle of an update would do it.

Yeah, that would do it.  Problem is, I didn't do that.  Even I know better than that.  I just let it do it's thing, as always - and bang.  Still mystified ...  :-\

...or it was zombies with bacon .. I know.  ;D

I'll try your "broken synaptic" trick tonight and see what gives.

Yep could be those dang bacon eating zombies! The real issue is rpm and synaptic are getting long in the tooth and that is why there is going to be a change coming next year with an update to the rpm libraries and a switch to another package manager.

You will get it sorted out. If not, just ask your son. He will fix it for you. LOL

Junior is the one who closed out Synaptic when longtom went to the kitchen to get a refreshment! Then he said oh crap! I didn't know dad was updating the computer. I'd better get out of here before he comes back!

THIS - is an extremely probable scenario.  Problem is - he is with the grannies 350 miles away.  That won't be easy to pin it on him .... :-X ;D

So he logged in with ssh and did it!

Seriously, my guess would be a full / partition. 5GB can fill up fast if you add lots of applications, view videos (/tmp files), remaster, run backups etc.
