Update frustrations...
« on: December 14, 2010, 12:11:45 PM »
Hi All,

Okay, so here are some issues I experience regularly when upgrading:

1) login screen gets set to default
2) login sound gets reset
3) open office - every time this gets updated, my documents open differently (ie: document WAS letter, but after upgrade gets opened as A4 size)

...and other stuff like this that I can't remember.

Pretty frustrating.  Other than never updating the system, is there any way to avoid this??

Thanks.

Strange - I update every few days (or whenever updates are available) and none of my settings are changed in that way.

Is openoffice "updated"? I always thought it was a matter of re-installing the latest version using the OfficeManager script.

The same here.

You are correct. Updating OOo is done through the Office Manager, i.e. the getopenoffice script. Synaptic is not used for this task.

Losing sound preferences in Skype, having to go into the Sound manager section, after updating my wife's PCLOS GNOME.  It stays the same on my KDE system, however.  Is it something with PulseAudio?  Then why wouldn't it affect my KDE?  Just a pain having to reset my wife's Skype everytime she wants to talk to the grandkids.

is the open office error in Gnome/Gator PClin to? I am wondering if this is not some error caused by the fact that PCLin is largely a KDE distro?

newbi462,
You have a misunderstanding about the importance of the desktop environment to the system.
PCLinuxOS is a Linux OS. The DE sits on top of the Linux kernel, plus the set of system tools, etc.. That is, the underlying system base system is the same for all DEs.

Where is the anger and hatred...??  I don't see it.  Just frustrated.  And legitimately so, I believe.  I expect some of the update issues are KDE4 related, but I don't even hint at placing any blame on anyone.  I don't care who did it or why.  I just want to avoid it in the future.  That's all.  Am I okay to feel this way??

And I'll resist saying "ANSWER ME ANSWER ME ANSWER ME".

Neal

I did not think it would as like you say they should be completely interchangeably. Was just wondering if some odd co dependency might be the cause. Like some setting is getting updated that should not. Like a month back all of us on KDE had what ever setting that was that made the icons on the desktop not stay put. But then Tex tweaked what ever he did and it was all good again.

No clue if it is something like that, was just thinking out loud.

I'm remembering, I'm remembering...

Here's one more...

Okay, so regarding the new "monochrome kde4 sys-tray icons that fit in better with the desktop environment".  First of all, I think the kde team blew it on this, since 97% or more of the kde icons seem to be full color and hence the monochrome icons do not indeed fit in with the DE.  Anyway, that is user choice, so I chose.  I went to the time, trouble and effort to figure out how to change these icons, changed them, and next time kde-base was upgraded, "Poof!" - goodbye to my full color tray icons and hello again to the new kde4 monochrome items that according to the kde team fit in better with my desktop environment.  It seems like the kde4 team really doesn't want me to keep my desktop the way I like it.  I can't keep my tray icons after updates.  I can't keep my login sound after updates.

These are little annoyances that make me frustrated with linux (or, likely in this case, frustrated with kde4).

No mention of the PCLOS team above, because I don't believe these issues are brought about by the PCLOS team.

Now I know what you are on about.

Yes, this is a KDE thing. I have just kind of learned to live with it and primarily use Compiz over KWin to minimize the affect, but some things just need to go though KDE. Lke the start up sound and so on.

One think I am really hoping finds it way in the KDE 5 is that it becomes more modular so as to allow the UI settings and so on to be in a completely modular tree so core things can be updated but the settings for individual users are referenced completely independent.

Of course because that would be in part changing how KDE works I don't see it coming before ver 5 but would be a much welcome addition. Right now like you say, rolling KDE updates mean with most updates you need to re-tweak. It is alot more noticeable in rolling distros like PClin and I thing the pros of a rolling distro out number the few cons like this but would be great if KDE would make these setting a sepret tree in KDE its self so it to could be rolling without this issue

Dulwithe,

I certainly couldn't see any evidence of anger or hatred in your first post. You appeared to be a bit irritated because some updates had replaced your settings with the default ones. And obviously that is something an update should not do. On the other hand the changes seemed rather trivial and easy to fix. That's why KDE is still my main DE.

But have you tried the other desktops? (When E17 is just a bit more stable I'll probably switch to Enlightenment.)

Same here. I never had an update reset my personal options.
