Don't know if this is what you are after, but on trouble, my first - and admittedly lazy - stop is always to delete (read: rename as .old or something for backup) xorg and restart the machine. That give me a fresh - and working - xorg.
Isn't there something about xorg going redundant, i.e. the hardware is detected on startup anyhow... I didn't think that had reached PCLOS already, though?
