No sound on Sony- VAIO VPCEA12EG[Solved]
« on: December 09, 2010, 02:19:27 AM »
Hello

I ve installed the latest PClinux- KDE....Everything is fine except the sound......I check it out with alsamixer and it shows that everything is right and the volume is at the top for all of them...But still I dont have any sound....Even I did alsaconf but nothing happened .....Sth  weird here is that when I plug in my headphone I can hear very low sound....Even its volume is high but I can hear hardly....Still no sound from speakers.....the result from lsmod is :

snd_pcm                58856  4 snd_usb_audio,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer              15794  2 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd_mixer_oss          11096  1 snd_pcm_oss
snd                    46351  19 snd_usb_audio,snd_usb_lib,snd_rawmidi,snd_hda_codec_intelhdmi,snd_hda_codec_realtek,snd_hda_intel,snd_hda_codec,snd_hwdep,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_pcm_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mixer_oss
What should I do guys? is it ok to remove the ALSA and install it again.?  Or its better to try pulseaudio?....
best regards....

I have a VAIO VPCEB1M1E and had no sound either.
I had to manually install the latest alsa driver to get it working.

Unless you know what you're doing I wouldn't recommend this course of action, as installing things out of the repository can ruin your system.

Perhaps the driver package will be updated soon.

First of all have you fully updated your system to the lastest packages via synaptics?

It seems that the alsa driver in the repository is the same as the one I manually installed - so perhaps a full system update and reboot will help.
If not, let's take it from there  :)

As far as I know, The Repository Speed Test is a tool that finds the fastest repository for you to use in Synaptic. This is not related to the packages on your system, or which ones you can update, as all repositories should contain the same packages.

In order to update pclinuxos, I usually just open Synaptic and then press "Reload", "Mark All Upgrades" and then "Apply".

Yup - Jaconux is right, thats how to do it.  The only other thing I'd suggest is to reboot your system, especially if graphics drivers are updated.

If the update doesn't cure your sound issue you could go into:

PCC (Configure Your Computer)  >> Hardware >> Sound Configuration

and check which driver is being used.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Sony Vaio SVE1513A4ESI Laptop, Intel Core i5, 2.6GHz, 6GB RAM, 750GB, 15.6" Intel HD Graphics 4000

Thanks.....Both of you....I ve not update it yet...But here is the driver info in PCC

Here you can select an alternative driver (either OSS or ALSA) for your sound card (Intel Corporation|5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High Definition Audio).

Your card currently use the ALSA "snd_hda_intel" driver (default driver for your card is "snd_hda_intel")

My system uses the same driver, but the hardware seems to be different despite the similarity of model numbers.

Anyway, have a go at a full system update followed by a reboot, and let us know how it goes.

Hi guys...

Unfortunately It did nt work out.....Also I installed the OS again and updated it but it did not work either,,,,,No sound.....

any suggestion would be highly appreciated.....

The point is before PCLINUX I was using Fedora and I had sound ,,,When I checked the alsamixer in there and pressed F2 for more info...It showed

that the version is 1.0.23 but in the same way I checked in PCLINUX that I noticed, it is 1.0.21.....then I checked the Update repository

and the version of alsa is 1.0.23....Im really confused....Why is it like that?

As i mentioned, the driver info in Alsamixer is 1.0.21....I just downloaded the Alsa 1.0.23 from its FTP server and installed it manually...Fortunately it worked out.....
