Screen capture software
« on: December 06, 2010, 12:23:47 PM »
Back in KDE 3.5 days, I had some kind of screen capture (snapshot) thingie that also allowed you to annotate the capture with text and some arrows.  Anyone know if there is something similar in the repo?

What's everybody else using?

I use screenie to take screenshots. There are other screenshot apps in the repos, but I like its simplicity.

TheChief,

You may wanna take a look at Shutter (it's in the repos). It'll do what you want.

Mine's built-in to gnome I guess, can't find a name for it other than gnome-screenshot, it's on Zen-mini from the get-go. Works really well, very simple, and I can select the whole desktop, the current window only, or select an area to grab, it also has a variable delay if I need to use that.
This aggression will not stand man.

KSnapShot is another option.

Generally I use ksnapshot and there is an "open with" option which will open the image in ....'what-ever-you-want'.  For annoting maybe Kolorpaint. Snag: it is not 100%, PrtScn to capture and bring the dialog up and if you select "open with" and it fails. Do a new snapshot from the dialog and it works.
Othewise and a bit overkill, Gimp has a screen capture facility and all the text and drawing tools needed. Gimp menu "File" -> "Create" -> "Screenshot".

A little trick for those boys with KDE - before using the PrintScreen you can draw free hand on the screen.
Here's how you can have it:

Great tip. There are many things that kde can do that most are not aware of.

It seems it is called this way in Linux.
This is the "Windows" key (right and left) called here this way. We in *nix OSes don't need to call it "Windows" key. Just "some other key" or "meta" ;D

I guessed that it would be the Windows key. But it seems that the plugin is not working on me. :( Still it is not a big deal.

No need to guess, friend.
It's explained - it is the so called "Windows" key. As far as there's no Windows in */nix world it is called "meta".

Actually Bill Gates stole and patented the "windows" idea from MTU Unix-team.

Did you click "Apply" after ticking off the box? I only ask because I was trying it out before I did that and it didn't work for me, either. Now it does... ;)

Thanks for that tip, UncleV - that's the kind of thing that makes us happy you're back!

Clicking "OK" or "Yes" or "Apply" is needed indeed.
Yes?
