Saving solutions and useful posts from the forum
« on: December 04, 2010, 02:49:01 AM »
I used to bookmark solutions to problems and tips that I want to try out I have been disappointed in the past when the forums were cleaned out by malefactors or posts removed for whatever reasons applicable at the time.

Now I save them with a Scrapbook extension available in Firefox.

The one I use currently is: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8186/

I could probably use a notebook and pen but my handwriting and printing is atrocious - most times I can't read my own notes.

Live long and perspire,

This type of thing baffles me why it does not come included with the browser. I suspect the reason is a common ground must be met because of users who instead desire a 'discreet' mode to be enabled by default.

You'd think after 4 releases of Firefox, a novice user could simply select during a session to either save everything or save nothing.

But in the meantime whilst the Mozilla foundation drags it's feet on such a simple, yet highly necessary feature we have this fine suggestion to utilize. Thank you macemm.

And when finally the penny drops over there at Mozilla, you can bet that this feature will be added with all the fanfare like it's their idea and the original developer will get chucked overboard. For more information, look for the "M$ Business Strategy 101" course at any learning place near you.

Nope. You try it. It's a bunch of crap if there is any java script. And the saved page goes and finds servers when you go and look at it from the disk. Save Page As should be illegal because of false advertising.  >:(

There is an option to save as 'Web Page, complete' but then the user would have to choose a location for saving. With the extension (not the only one) I mentioned above I only have to drag the page icon to the scrapbook sidebar. All the fiddly bits are taken care of. I don't have to remember the name of a folder or any of that stuff. You can organise the saved files by creating named folders in the sidebar to hold several posts for example from PCLinuxOS wise people. You set up a central location for the ScrapBook extension to hold all the data. Set and forget as we used to say.

I have hundreds of saved web pages - occasionally I remember to read them. I really use the key ones from the forum like what to do when Synaptic says that thing about '... failed to fetch blah blah, continue? Yes/No'. I got that the other day couldn't remember for the life of me what was the worst answer to give. Very nearly clicked 'Yes' but I knew I had a forum post saved in Scrapbook and was able to locate it quickly - not looking for saved web pages in unknown locations on various partitions and drives - choose 'No' which is not obvious for me.

What do you do for recalling the words of wisdom given to you from O-P and others for example?

Live long and prospero,

Hugh

Hugh

I don't recall seeing that since my Windows days with IE. My current copy of Firefox does NOT have that "feature."

Can you possibly tell me where to find that under Firefox?

Tips and Tricks are always a nice addition for The PCLOS. Since my early days, I have added a file,
on a safe HD, (Tips) hi-lite the text, click and save with an editor of choice, to (Tips)
folder, filed under name's, too be found quickly. SO when I have too or want to "redo" the HD
I have everything, all short cuts and add on's listed, so I can pu where I left off...
