Playing with Pulse Audio on PCLinuxOS
« on: December 03, 2010, 08:53:38 PM »
01. Open Synaptic press reload to get current file list.
02. Get fully updated including updated drakxtools (12.78-24)
03. Search for task-pulseaudio
04. Right click and Mark for installation
05. Press Apply
06. Open Configure your computer
07. Select hardware -> Sound Configuration
08. Select Enable Pulse Audio & Glitch Free Mode
09. Click OK, Click  OK
10. Close out everything and reboot.

After rebooting check Configure your computer -> Sound Configuration and make sure Pulse Audio is still checked enabled. If not then exit and with a file manager in root mode delete /var/lib/rpm/alternatives/soundprofile and goto step 06 again.

Troubleshooting:
/etc/alternatives/soundprofile symlink should be pointing to /etc/sound/profiles/pulse folder

/etc/sound/profiles/pulse folder should have a profile.conf file with the contents

SOUNDPROFILE=pulse

/etc/sysconfig/pulseaudio file should read if enabled:

PULSE_SERVER_TYPE=personal

Additional configuration files are located in /etc/pulse folder.

I did the update on a HP pavillion DV 7 1150ed laptop (snd_hda_intel driver).

No sound issues so far with aTunes (using mplayer), firefox (you tube), ksCD, SMplayer, VLC, Dragonplayer and startup and shutdown.

Mixer has only one channel and gets dynamically an extra when an application is playing a stream.
That ends at least any sound issues caused by missing channels :)

p.s. ksCd crashed a couple of times before it played a CD and Dragonplayer did not find a DVD in the tray, but did play it when I used the action in the device tray. Issues not likely to be related to pulseaudio.

I enabled Pulse Audio two days ago. Have the same single mixer channel, and using Youtube, VLC and Amarok has brought no problems at all.

Looking good  ;)

Will this eventually fixes my problem of getting my USB speaker (Logitech S-150) to work? Thinking of trying it out, but wondering if there is a way to revert to default setting if things get even worse. This is my main working system anyway.

I have been using Pulse for quite some time and yes it allows user to control the sources and the sinks for all the audio streams ........  but you need to install the Pulse plugins for the applications you use.

***

Tex,
Just had a look at my  /etc/sysconfig/pulseaudio  file and the entry there is

Code: [Select]
PULSE_SERVER_TYPE=none
Is there any information about the differences this may cause in operation?

I also notice the following

/etc/alternatives/soundprofile symlink should be pointing to /etc/sound/profiles/pulse folder

Here it actually point to

Code: [Select]
/etc/sound/profiles/alsa

The real question is .......  should the present working settings be changed manually?

Thank you.

regards.

Thanks Tex and everyone else for their contributions.

No offense, but the word pulseaudio makes me want to run for the hills screaming.

Right now I have an absolutely rotten to the core i7 870 on the gigabyte p55a-ud3 running LXDE.

The on-board sound fights with my M-Audio delta 10/10 which has an identity crisis.

On top of that I got a powercolor brand video card (quiet, no fan) HD 4350 with a HDMI output (I use the VGA output) that from time to time insists -it- should be the default sound device.

I am supposed to give this one to someone by the end of the year, but geez. I'm pulling my hair out.  >:(

I recall a post (from Tex?) that deals with the sound on HDMI problems ......  don't have it here so do not recall its contents.
It might be worth a search ......   ;)

Nice. I have just installed the package and now the Logitech S-150 is working so well. I would say that it is actually much better than Linux Mint that I have used before. Thanks, Texstar. Now 1 less reason to leave PCLinuxOS and 1 more reason to love it more.

That means you should go back and follow the steps outlined above. Pulse audio is not enabled.

Yes, Go back into configure your computer and uncheck pulse audio and install task-pulseaudio-remove package which will take out all but the minimum pulse library dependencies.

That is great. This is the first time I have gotten pulse audio working properly PCLinuxOS. In the past there has always been something that did not work. Your mileage may vary though.

Very strange .....  as it is working perfectly .......  and has been for many months.

I have been able to disable it in the sound section of PCC, and when that is done it is quite obviously not working ....  access denial to pavucontrol GUI, and a distinct lack of anything Pulse showing in KDECC Multimedia - Phonon.

This install is less than a week old.
Pulse is working ....  and working as well as it was on the previous install.

I can direct the various sound streams to whichever sound sink device I have connected ......  wireless headphones, wired headphones, usb speakers etc etc.

Seems I might be better off leaving things as they are ........

regards.

PCLinuxOS does not ship with pulse audio enabled. It ships with alsa sound system enabled which works fine for most people. Pulse audio is an additional layer placed on top of the alsa sound system.  I won't go into details as to why some people may want pulse audio enabled.  There is no reason to mess with your sound system if everything is working. This is posted in the advanced section for those who might want to play.

As I said .......  I have had Pulse Audio working on PCLOS for quite some time.

It is working and is using - apparently - different settings to what you posted, as I indicated above. I made no manual edits to any of those settings.

I installed and enabled Pulse (April 2010) so that I could have control over the audio streams and sinks and be able to divert the sound streams to whichever devices I choose.

As I have a working Pulse Audio install I will leave the settings as they are.

regards.
