mplayer and LXDE
« on: December 03, 2010, 06:14:43 PM »

Hi

Trying to get mplayer to play audio and video thru Firefox's plugins.   Installed the
gecko plugins as well as the regular mplayer plugins and the gecko were needed to
get  Windows Media stream audio to play.   So I think the audio is working OK.
But I can't get the Windows Media video streams to play thru LXDE.  I have the
same settings in mplayer in LXDE as they are in Gnome but Gnome works for video
and LXDE does not.  I wonder what I am missing ?

thanks for any ideas,

Did you install win32 codecs?

Hi,

And thanks for the response.   I installed the win32codecs-all package, rebooted and tried
the Windows Media audio station and it still works fine.   The Windows Video stream station
still locks up after trying to play just a split second.  A RealPlayer video station doesn't play either
just stops when trying to connect.

Any further settings I can tune ?

thx

Could you provide an example link to what you are trying to play and how you would prefer to play it?

Or maybe, what you are watching is ghastly or even  :o secret  :o

The link is :

http://www.chooseandwatch.com/

It has quite a variety of video stations.   HGTV and a RockTV station using Windows Media
connected right up.  The other stations connect and stop, connect and stop.   It has stations
using all the video stream formats so it's a good place to check the plugins for video streams.
I'm trying these streams not embedded so they play in Gnome-Mplayer directly.

Like I said, I installed the gecko plugins and a Windows Media audio station connected right up
which would not connect before, but I'll have to try some others later next week.   Time is
short today.  One plugin for audio appears to use Java and the other does not.  Could be the
difference.

The link I was using for radio is :

http://www.windowsmedia.com/radioui/home.aspx

Thanks for your response and ideas,

Patrick013

Hi,

I've heard about libdvdcss2, I'll install that ASAP then.
Other players ?   No, just the gnome-mplayer.   The
other players I've seen don't have as many specific
plugins it seems, just a general streaming plugin.  Not
aware of their capabilities nor have I tried the two links
with them.

I'll post back when I've tried the libdvdcss2 package then.

Thanks,

Hello,

OK, the libdvdcss2 is installed and about half the Windows Media video streams are OK
and about half connect and stop on that web site.

The Windows Media audio streams are connecting but only directly from the source
website not thru the radio station guide website.   Some of them however do not connect.

So, it's working like that.   If there's something else I can add to tune up mplayer let me
know or another program that has more capabilities.

Thanks for your response,
