lxpanel how to reset firefox application

I'm using the firefox 4 beta in /opt/firefox/ rather than the firefox 3 originally installed.

I found lxde help via google that suggested that lxde uses the x-www-browser app to invoke firefox and recommending

alternatives-update --config x-www-browser
Unforutantely this doesn't work.

So I created a link in /etc/alternatives

ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox x-www-browser
That worked, but ... after a reboot, clicking the panel browser icon continues to invoke firefox 3.

the alternatives-update command now says 'no alternatives for firefox'.

How can I fix this.
My system specs are:

LXDE Mini version installed 11/26/2010
System76 Starling Netbook
CPU - Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270   @ 1.60GHz stepping 02
RAM - 2G
Mbrd - Unknown using Intel N10/ICH 7 Family chipset
Video - Intel 945GME onboard
HD - SATA Intel 82801GBM/GHM (ICH7 Family) SATA controller
Comm - Realtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E Ethernet
       Realtek RTL8187B wireless(6) Make & model of printer if printer issue.
       (Mostly using wireless)

have you tried tweaking your firefox.desktop file (in /usr/share/applications) to point to your beta executable? (backup old one 1st)

if that doesn't work, i'm sure someone smarter than me will be along soon

I don't use lxde (KDE for me  ) but I extract the Firefox download to a new folder in /home and run the firefox file from there.

I usually create a new menu entry for it and also drop an icon onto the panel and run it with the firefox -P command so I can choose which profile to use.

That works fine for me (and leaves my original Firefox 3.6.12 as is so I can use it when I want)

Not sure how this will apply in lxde though.........
