I have been trying to keep up with this but can anyone tell me what is happening to 4.8, I haven't been able to find anything except the beta 2 mini which has been removed.

Packages are done and still being updated. In order to update it requires a reset of your current desktop to a 4.8.1 default setting. It also requires if one is upgrading through XFCE to open a terminal and type in a command to logout because of panel changes from 4.6.x to 4.8.1. There is a logout issue if you run a KDE application from within XFCE 4.8.1 and then try to log out. It hangs for up to a minute before you get back to the login screen.  Also if you play around with session save enable and disable you can suddenly lose your desktop window decoration.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but does this mean that I can update a Phoenix or Phoenix Mini up to Xfce 4.8 now?

I believe that for the time being, the answer is "No." I'm running a fully updated Phoenix on my computer and it has Xfce 4.6.2. I think the same is true for older installs of Phoenix Mini; as Texstar wrote above, he has run into some problems with 4.8. So I assume that with these .iso's, Xfce 4.8 will "be ready when it's ready."

If you are anxious to try out Xfce 4.8 and feeling adventurous, you can download and install Sproggy's (Kori's) new Phinx 2011.05 RC1:

So is there an easy way to get the previous panel settings back?

I've just updated to xfce 4.8 (late, I know, but I didn't even realise that I was not getting xfce updates, as I did not have that Synaptic section selected  ::) ) and, as Tex stated, my simple left-hand-side single panel has reverted to the default top and bottom ones.

I have backups of my system, but I'm not sure which file(s) I should revert to to get my nice panel back. Can anyone help?

right click on 1 of your panels ... then choose Panel >>> Panel Settings ... you can then tweak to your hearts content

No it has not been officially released by PCLinuxOS because of 3 nasty bugs that need to be addressed.
