XFCE 4.8
« on: November 30, 2010, 01:36:41 PM »
Hello All

I was reading about the new XFCE 4.8 which is still in development and I have a question on a statement in the article.

"Among the most notable updates is that we have ported the entire Xfce core (Thunar, xfdesktop and thunar-volman in particular) from ThunarVFS to GIO, bringing remote filesystems to the Xfce desktop."

What does the above mean? I am not sure what is a "remote file system." I thought maybe Samba, but I can already access my Samba shares.

It also states that we will be able to edit the menu using a third party editor. Now that part I understand and appreciate. Finally the ability to make my menu really mine! Well the ability to make it mine a lot easier than it is today!

From one PCLOS Phoenix user to another, the long and short of this is that if your computer is connected to a network (let's say a home wireless network, for example, like we have), any other computers on that network that are on will probably show up in the left pane of Thunar (I have to confess here that I'm just guessing at how this will work once implemented in Xfce), just like your Home, Music, Documents, Downloads, etc. folders currently do, with that computer in the list.  You can then click on that computer in Thunar, and any and all shared folders on that computer will show up in Thunar.  I would expect that this will likely be the way it works, kind of like "My Network Places" or "Network Neighborhood" in Windows.

Like I said, this is what it will allow you to do in Thunar, but I can't swear to just HOW it will be done.  The actual steps involved and what to look for and such could very well be entirely different.  Like I said, as far as the details go, this is just a guess on my part.  But I do know that the ability to do this will become a reality in Thunar come sometime in January.  Does this answer your question?

Hope this helps! :-)

PS -- well, I see that Sproggy answered at the same time I did and that yes, drives on other computers will show up in Thunar, albeit probably not under names that you're used to.

Question for Sproggy:  When the final ISO for this is released, is wiping off our current Phoenix installations and doing a clean installation of Phoenix with Xfce 4.8 the ONLY way to install the Xfce 4.8 edition when it becomes available, as opposed to a rolling-release upgrade?

Oh, OK -- so this can be installed as an update just like any other update, then?

ok first things first for you ....

XFCE 4.8pre1 is still only alpha/beta stage ... it has a few minor bugs .... like trash applet not working and panel grouping crashes when you group more than 5 of 1 type of window ... but it does work nice ...

I tried it and it's looks great and I loved being able to use my shares in the file manager :)

Thanks!

Awesome!  I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for this one in Synaptic in about 6 weeks or so (it's my understanding that it'll be ready by sometime in mid-January).

Xfce 4.8 Is A Step Closer To Release

http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=ODg3Mw

It was barely a month ago that the first development snapshot of Xfce 4.8 arrived, but being released this Sunday is the second preview release of the forthcoming Xfce 4.8 desktop, expected to go gold in January.

The Xfce 4.8pre2 release particularly focuses upon resolving bugs that were found during Xfce 4.8pre1, but there was some feature freeze exceptions made with new Xfce panel features for proper support for editing the application menu and integration support with Compiz view-port. The application menu editing can now be handled by GNOME's Alacarte.

The Xfce 4.8pre2 release also marks the beginning of the 4.8 string freeze leading up to the official release. The 16th of January is the expected date of the official 4.8.0 release of this alternative desktop environment to GNOME and KDE, among others.

The Xfce 4.8pre2 release announcement can be found at Xfce.org.

I'd deprecate that pain in the ass panel and replace it with Docky.

Trust me on this Sproggy, once you play around with it, the XFCE panel gets old fast.  ;D

I would like to have a look at this one. Do you plan to release a special XFCE iso of PCLinuxOS right after 4.8.0 has made it to the repos?

Do you feel it is more demanding on the system or it's just as fast and light?
