rtl8191SE
« on: November 20, 2010, 11:13:59 AM »
My problem is probably simple, but I am pretty new at Linux.

After dual booting one computer with Windows XP and PCLinuxOS and everything working like a charm, I got bold and thought, "Why not just load PCLinuxOS by itself, on my spare computer"? Ran the LIVECD and watched as everything loaded up. EXCEPT.............no internet connection. It seems that the rt8191SE chip in my wireless network adapter on that computer, had no driver. Searches have given me all kinds of contradictory information.
One says there is no driver, another says there is, another says to set up a WIRED connection first and then get updates from the package manager, and still another said I would have to compile one.

Using version 2010.1 and KDE 4.5.3

I would appreciate any help anyone can give this Linux newbie.

If you can find and provide the link to the 8191 source code, ask Tex on the Package request forum to provide it. Also, try installing the dkms-r8192 package thru Synaptic. It might work.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.

My search on PCLinuxOS (via Google):
Quote
site:pclinuxos.com rt8191SE

gave... NOTHING
(so there can't be any bad info about it; there are similar named wireless cards: 8192SE, 8192E, ...., and they have many info....)
[/s]Better info, found with searching for rtl8191se

Normally it's supported automatically...
Look here: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:GdcKFrxc_VoJ:www.pclinuxos.com/%3Fm%3D201005+site:pclinuxos.com+rtl8191SE&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk

search for "rtl81" in Synaptic and install some related packages (as said by Cyrwyn)
Do a reboot after....
Maybe you can also try another kernel (search for "kernel" in Synaptic and try e.g. the one without .bfs, just to see if it works when the modules are rebuilt... => an extra entry is automatically added to GRUB)

ATTENTION: check FIRST if your card is switched ON (check for the status light, or sth else....)

This is what Synaptic says:

File name = dkms-r8192se

dkms package for r8192se driver

This package contains the r8192se driver for
Realtek RTL8191SE/RTL8192SE WiFi cards.

If you've got an ethernet cable you could use that to connect the net and then download the above driver during the install process.

Thanks Menotu...
Normally this is pre-installed on your system (if you installed a full system, from a live-cd of about 700MB),
but if not, install it!
And check your switch (simple to forget...  :D - many didn't notice it in the past)

2010.1.  Is this correct?

Have you tried getting the latest (2010.10, I believe...possibly 2010.11).

(Or, it could be a type, and you're are using the latest version?)
