Solved one problem. cdrkit was installed on Zen 2010.07 but not on 2010.10, installing it has now enabled the right-click context menu choice labeled "Write to Disc" to actually write something to the disk. ::)

Now tackling the camera issue.

*edit* wow, fixed the camera issue too. Sure seems a cheap fix at less than one megabyte to enable these two important basic functions.

Good for you. Now you will know what to install next time. Again zen mini is for advanced users who know what they need to install like printer packages for printer support, nvidia or fglrx drivers for 3D desktop support. task-3ddesktop for compiz, flashplugin for flash playback, mplayerplugin for quicktime playback etc...

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Well Uncle, in truth I had begun to suspect Gnome, perhaps it was all the KDE propaganda?  :D :D

But in the end it wasn't Gnome at all, just a single package that was left out, that happened to be a hinge-pin for several pieces of basic functionality.

Once again, Old-Polack has "saved my bacon" :D, by pointing the way to the answers, I LOVE that guy ;D think i'll name one of my baby chickens after him ;) :D :D

With a beak like that, shouldn't be a problem if you can figure out an ear substitute.  ;D

i never could make a mini version to work, i always use normal versions

Dunno about you, but I've installed Phoenix Mini on 3 different machines and it's been nothing short of amazing.

and while we are all fanboying around - listen to the man.  It is indeed a wonderful base to get going.  And since Texstar called me an advanced user because I use Mini versions I feel much more knowledgeable too ...

No ear substitute needed. Check out this featherpicker:

yep, Old Polack said in a post not long ago, that I had made a good point, I took that as kind of a landmark moment fer me ;D

The mini's are great, Zen may be a little tougher than some because it's so very mini, but I appreciate it for that all the much more, I like having the choices in software all up to me. But it can be difficult for us new users, that's one of the reasons I started the thread for mini-users to share what programs they have loaded in their installs. And lately I have started modifying my main post there, to include a list of the extra packages I have installed to enable some functions that aren't installed by default. So it becomes a handy reference for new folks I hope, where they can get quick answers for noob questions. I'm hoping some of the great users of the other mini's might chime in as well, a whole bunch of them have already posted and I have found some excellent programs from looking at their lists. And adding to those lists with any setup hints or packages that might be needed for certain functions/programs, would prove to be quite the boon to new community members I think. :)
