freshclam?
« on: November 25, 2010, 08:40:49 PM »
Q: Is freshclam available on any of the repositories? I think I've gone through each one that I could connect to, and have yet to find it.
Granted, I don't really feel I need it, but it makes Windows network admins happy to know I have up-to-date antivirus protection installed should I need to user their networks. I can't understand why clamav is available if there's no way to update it.

I believe it installs with clamtk, the GUI frontend, I installed it at the same time I installed clamav, and freshclam is there on mine, updates fine. Do you already have clamtk installed?

Yes, it's installed. I attempted to edit the file "freshclam.conf" as root, but haven't quite figured it out yet.

No need, you just need to have network-up running in services. Open the Clamtk GUI, click  Help>Check for updates>Signature updates and uncheck the the other two (don't need to update the program or engine and shouldn't do it outside the repo anyway), then click the button to go ahead and update signatures.

If you want to schedule things to run automatically, it's there under Advanced>Scheduler.

Good luck, hope this helps! :)

After you have installed "ClamAV", you can open terminal and do:

su
pwd (enter your administrator password)
freshclam

If you are connected to the Internet, "ClamAV" will update. If a message is displayed that a configuration file must be edited, do so.

I'm also having freshclam problems.  Inspecting Services shows that the network-up service is configured to start up at boot time, but it is logged as 'stopped', and manual starting doesn't work.  So, I can't automate the Clamav update process, which is an inconvenience.

Also, the latest update of the clamav-related packages gave a report that:

/etc/clamd.conf created as /etc/clamd.conf.rpmnew

so presumably I need to re-name the .conf file by removing the '.rpmnew' (after checking any differences between the two and making appropriate changes - what would these be?) ?

Any advice or suggestions would be welcome

Network-up doesn't have to be listed as actually "running" on my system for freshclam to work from the GUI, it is enabled at boot, and is pretty much always stopped after that, I just opened services and it is stopped, and I just did an update with no problems. I do remember there was some little tinkering thing I had to do (my memory is getting bad about the little things), but can't remember the exact sequence, I know for a fact that I didn't have to manually edit clamd-conf or any other files or use the command line. It may be that I started network-up manually then re-started clamtk and then was able to update, but that was only on the first instance, after that it has no issues.
This aggression will not stand man.

Got the freshclam command running by commenting out "Example" in freshclam.conf by putting a # in front of it. In the above screen shot this has already been done but in my original freshclam.conf file it was not commented out. Hope this helps.

Hello,

For some reason, the config file for freshclam has some 'necessary' lines commented out. I got it to work by removing the # before some lines. Look for those that do not have #.

1. I modified DatabaseMirror db.us.clamav.net. It had a # at the beginning and was DatabaseMirror db.XY.clamav.net instead of DatabaseMirror db.us.clamav.net. (Use the appropriate country code.)

2. I removed the # before DatabaseDirectory /var/lib/clamav.

Here's my file with those modifications. Hope this helps

And why wouldn't it be stopped? :-\ Your network is up and running, isn't it? ??? Or do you think that your network connection must be continually restarted? ::)

This tells you that your network is up and running; i.e. network-up has done its job and started your connection.

There was 'clam won't update' thread here.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,97115.msg821944.html#msg821944

usual newbie disclaimer - but it seemed to work for me.

I have tried modifying freshclam.conf per exterran and per Wolverine_tech without success.  I notice that Wolverine_tech has
commented out DatabaseMirror database.clamav.net in spite of the warning.  I tried it both ways.
Wolverine_tech also said to edit /va/lib/clamav.  I can't get at the file--the directory shows:
[doug@localhost lib]$ cd clamav
[doug@localhost clamav]$ ls -la
total 30332
drwxr-xr-x  3 clamav clamav     4096 Nov 10 00:26 ./
drwxr-xr-x 43 root   root       4096 Jan  9 00:23 ../
-rw-r--r--  1 clamav clamav   292612 Nov 10 00:26 daily.cvd
-rw-r--r--  1 clamav clamav 30750647 Nov 10 00:26 main.cvd
drwxr-xr-x  2 clamav clamav     4096 Nov 10 00:26 tmp/
When I try to open one of the clamav files, I get "clamav is a directory" and besides, I don't know which of the clamav files
is the one that Wolverine_tech is referring to.

Also: I do not seem to have "network up" and when I type "network" I get command not found.
I also cannot do Help>Check for Updates>Signature as there is no such path.

Typing freshclam yields:
[doug@localhost /]$ freshclam
ERROR: Can't create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-0da4f7c9f38b12e6f0d34957886dd88e
Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 500 or GID 500

I'm obviously over my head (as usual) and would appreciate some help here.  Thanx, gurus!  --doug

I misread the instructions:  I do not have to edit a file in /var/lib/clamav.  He was referring to a comment in (about) line 13 in the frshclam.conf file. The change he referred to in line 13 has been made.    --doug
